
The Education Law Association has chosen San Antonio, TX - Sheraton Gunter Hotel as the site for its 54th Annual Education Law Conference.
The conference, although national in scope, will feature a special full-day Texas Preconference Session on November 19 entitled “Education Law in Texas; The Courts, the Legislature, and Public Policy”. Scheduled speakers include: Florence Shapiro, Texas State Senator; Robert Scott, Texas Commissioner of Education; Robert Eissler,Texas State Representative, and others.
This 4-day national conference event, with over 50 topic sessions to choose from include : Special Needs Students, Due Process, Americans with Disabilities Act, Technology in Education, Sexual Orientation, First and Fourth Amendment Rights, No Child Left Behind Act, Religion, Internet Safety, Ethics, Affirmative Action, Title IX, NCLB, IDEA, and much more.
Thomas Hutton, Senior Staff Attorney, National School Boards Association (NSBA), will provide an overview of recent and upcoming cases that will have an impact on educational policies and procedures. Philip K. Howard, Founder and Chair, Common Good, and author of “The Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America” will provide some unique perspectives. Doug Laycock, Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School and Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel, Liberty Legal Institute will engage attendees in lively discussion of the role of religion in public schools in the 21st Century.
ELA, established in 1954, is a nonprofit, nonadvocacy 501(c)3 association that promotes interest in and understanding of the legal framework of education and the rights of students, parents, school administrators, school boards, and school employees in public and private K-12 educational institutions, as well as higher education. ELA provides monthly case law summaries, and publishes several books per year on current education law topics including “The Yearbook of Education Law.”
