Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Presents Historias y Recuerdos
Sept. 23, 2008 (San Antonio, Texas) --The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center presents its annual presentation of “Historias y Recuerdos,” an innovative dance project featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company from Nov. 20-23, 2008 in the historic Guadalupe Theater at 1301 Guadalupe Street. Stories from the community inspired the original choreography created by a team of Guadalupe Dance Company dancer-choreographers led by Jeannette Chavez, Denise Guerra, Dava Hernandez and Jorge Gaxiola. “Historias y Recuerdos” incorporates traditional Mexican dance and music framed by a video backdrop of San Antonio stories.
“In an effort to discover their own identity and gain more opportunities, many Mexican families moved away from their beloved barrio,” said Belinda Menchaca, programs manager for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. “Along with them went the countless stories of generations past that live only in the minds of many community members’ parents and grandparents. Years of service in the military, Grandma’s delicious menudo, playing games on the corner and listening to the radio, were all part of life many years ago.”
Today is a very different world, but those same moments of sharing and family values are still at the core of many families roots and rich heritage. Family, love, youth, joy, struggle and pain are the themes of the inspiring original choreography by the Guadalupe Dance Company and honors the memories of generations past and brings them to life on stage.
