Is it possible to find an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich in San Antonio? The folks at Youz Guyz in Universal City offer a resounding “YES!”

The Divas visited Youz Guyz at 314-316 Pat Booker Road in Universal City, for lunch the other day to experience Philly cheesesteak the way it’s made in, you guessed it, Philly.

Opened just four months ago, owners Jimmy and Kathy Delaurentis created a “sandwich stand” to rival those famous in Philadelphia. And they should know — relocating directly from South Philly, both can be found working the kitchen. We found out the biggest difference between our sandwich stand and the original up north is a place to sit. In Philly, you get your sandwich and move on down the road, eating and dripping all the way.

But for those of us who have some time to get away from the office, Youz Guyz offers counter service and a cozy (little small) dining room area that is decorated with paraphernalia from Philly and instructions on the right way to order a sandwich — “wit or witout.” It refers to onions, and it makes more sense if you say it loud.

Hershey ordered a “cheesesteak whiz wit.” To the lay person, this means a cheesesteak sandwich with cheese whiz and onions.

This is THE sandwich, the classic, the one showcased on the Food Network. And according to Kathy, the Philadelphians use cheese whiz on this sandwich because it’s fast. Get in, get your sandwich and get out of the way.

Hershey enjoyed every bit of it, adding more whiz as she went. The steak is tender, very juicy and well seasoned and, along with the grilled onions, is piled into some of the best bread any of us has tasted.

The rolls are fresh, soft on the inside with a nice crusty outside. These are available for sale, by the way, $4.80 for a half-dozen. Did I mention the rolls are enormous? These sandwiches are so big, they could easily be shared.

Godiva also ordered the cheese steak but with provolone cheese and onions. Again, nice and yummy, but I think she preferred the cheese whiz Hershey was smearing all over her sandwich.

I had to be different, so I ordered the hot roast beef with provolone cheese. Oh boy, that is some good roast beef. And then top it with cheese on that great bread. I almost had to fight the other divas off with my Old Bay fries. These are French fries sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning, lots of flavor. But the fries are also available plain or “wit” cheese whiz. We tried the onion rings as well, and found these to be light, and crispy with firm, tasty onions. We all shared, like good little girls.

Other menu options are grilled Italian hot sausage, grilled hot dogs and chicken fingers. Mozzarella sticks are also on the menu and we did see a Monday night football special featuring hot wings.

For dessert, Youz Guyz offers different flavors of Italian water ice. Godiva and I were trying to explain Italian ice to Hershey who had never had it before and in the process we were treated to samples of the frozen concoction. Thanks, Kathy! Hershey was sold the second she tried the cherry flavored Italian water ice. It’s like a thick, kinda creamy sherbet, but better.

The only draw back to Youz Guyz is the parking situation and, the way I understand it, there isn’t much that can be done. Being located just a few blocks from Randolph Air Force Base, the traffic at lunch time is a little nuts and parking is at a premium. Don’t let this stop you from trying it out, though. I actually parked a block away and walked over. As they say, they serve “good food wit’ an attitude” and that attitude couldn’t be better.

The Dining Divas award Youz Guyz: 5 crowns for food; 4 crowns for service; and 5 crowns overall. Yo, Delaurentis, way to go!

Here’s to delicious dining!
