The Boerne Optimists Club, at a recognition dinner this week, honored its students of the month for the past six months.  Samantha Burns Samantha Burns December Parents: Marv and Debbie Burns Accomplishments: First place-Alamo Regional Science Fair, Meteorological Society Award, Outstanding Project from Association of Women Geoscientist, Yale Science and Engineering Association Award for Outstanding Project, second place at 2006 Texas Academy of Science. Activities: Four years band, FCCLA, Activity Planner for Science Club, Science Fair Participant. Hobbies: Shopping, designing homes, watching Audrey Hepburn movies, hanging out with family. Plans: Attend UTSA School of Architecture; graduate with a master’s degree in sustainable architecture and a minor in journalism or interior design.  Dustin Benac Dustin Benac December Parents: Dan and Dianne Benac Accomplishments: Fox News Scholar Athlete, Express-News/Univision Student of the Month, member of 2004 Cross Country State Championship and 2005 Cross Country state runner-up. Activities: Cross country, student council member, Wyldlife student leader, Young Life Campaigners Bible study leader, First Baptist Church youth. Hobbies: fly fishing, running, playing the djembe (hand drum), spending time with friends and family and ultimate Frisbee. Plans: To attend college (undecided at this time) to obtain a Ph.D. and one day return to the college classroom as a professor.  Anna Kelley Anna Kelley January Parents: Michael and Diana Kelly Accomplishments: Best drum major in Harlandale Marching Festival, Golden Baton Award in BHS Track and Field, Most Improved Player in BHS Band, Academic Recognition Award in BHS Swim Team, Greyhound Leadership Award in BHS Swim Team. Activities: BHS Symphonic Honors Band and Marching Band, National Honor Society, Musical Arts Center of San Antonio classical piano study, Bible study fellowship and Upper Room Bible study. Hobbies: Running, listening to music, reading, going to movies, drawing, playing piano, cooking, hiking, snow skiing, and water skiing. Plans: To attend Texas A & M’s College of Architecture and become a licensed architect.  Nick Hearn Nick Hearn January Parents: Tom and Valerie Hearn Accomplishments: Elected student body president in 11th and 12th grades, Academic Award-10th grade Geometry, voted Most Spirited Male of the Senior Class, BOA student leader. Activities: student council president, cross country, baseball, National Honor Society, St. Peter’s youth group. Hobbies: Running, hiking, reading, camping, drawing, swimming, spelunking, Frisbee golf, ultimate Frisbee, freestyle Frisbee. Plans: To attend Texas A & M University to study environmental science.  Holly Haynes Holly Haynes February Parents: Brad and Cindy Haynes Accomplishments: Most Spirited Senior Girl, All A Honor Roll, Good Citizenship Award from the Daughters’ of the American Revolution, Who’s Who among American High School Students, National Honor Roll. Activities: Student Council, National Honor Society, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Young Life, and Theatre Arts Spring Play. Hobbies: Missions, Young Life, dancing, church, Frisbee and music. Plans: To attend Texas A & M and pursue a degree in international studies in hopes of being a missionary in Central America.  Daniel Brennan Daniel Brennan February Parents: Joseph and Pamela Brennan. Accomplishments: Optimist Student of the Month, full Navy ROTC Scholarship, appointments to West Point and the Naval Academy. Activities: student council, St. Peter’s Catholic Church youth group leader, baseball, masters swimming. Hobbies: Swimming, camping, hanging out with friends. Plans: To attend the University of Notre Dame and become an officer in the United States Marine Corps and eventually work for the FBI or CIA.  Ansley Bradley Ansley Bradley March Parents: Rob and Darla Bradley Accomplishments: 2006 Outstanding Student Council Member, Homecoming Queen, Best All-Around Greyhound, 2007 District 27 4A All-Star Cast Member, St. John Lutheran Church youth council member. Activities: One Act Play, student council, school musicals and plays, National Honor Society, St. John Lutheran youth group. Hobbies: Singing, painting and acting. Plans: To attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in theater and dance.  Brian Reinhart Brian Reinhart March Parents: Thomas and Nur Reinhart Accomplishments: National Merit finalist, U.S. Presidential Scholarship nominee (first BHS student ever), AP Scholar with Distinction. (“Fun fact”: In the fifth grade placed fourth in the Indiana State Geography Bee.) Activities: Founding member of BHS Creative Writing Club, National Honor Society, volunteer for Boys and Girls Club. Hobbies: Reading, creative writing, current events and history. Plans: To attend Rice University with intentions to double-major in English and a social-sciences field to be decided.  Chelsea San Miguel Chelsea San Miguel April Parents: J. J. and Angie San Miguel Accomplishments: Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2005 and 2006, Boerne Hero Award for saving a life. Activities: Athletic training, BHS student council, Interact, National Honor Society. Hobbies: Community service, reading, my dog Moochie, and being with friends and family. Plans: To attend UTSA and study humanities.  Brad Kurz Brad Kurz April Parents: Richard Kurz and Debbie Aaron Accomplishments: Top Regional Scholastic Academic Decathlon (two years), first place-economics at State Academic Decathlon Meet, third place-mathematics State ACDEC, Reserve Drum Major, Director of 206-2007 Polka Band which were Regional and State Winners. Activities: Band, One Act Play cast, Academic Decathlon team, yearbook and mock trial state team. Hobbies: Singing, acting and performing on stage. Plans: To attend University of Texas at Austin and possible obtain a degree in political science, possibly go on to law school.  Ryan Beaver Ryan Beaver May Parents: Chuck Beaver and Marcia Beaver Accomplishments: 2006 Academic Decathlon state medalist–honors division, band section leader, AP Scholar Band (4 years), Academic Decathlon (two years) Mock Trial – 2 years, Boerne Outdoor Academy (two years). Hobbies: Reading, hanging with friends and family, relaxing at home. Plans: To attend University of Texas at Austin and major in economics  Devin Light Devin Light May Parents: John and Susan Light Accomplishments: Accepted to University of Texas at Austin, Wake Forest University and waiting list of Rice University; finalist for Business Professionals of America State Competition in HTML. Activities: Boerne Outdoor Academy (two years), volunteer at Fabra Elementary, Independent AP Test Preparation Material Study, working with animals on family alpaca farm. Hobbies: Electronics, computers, studying history, and watching both new and old movies. Plans: To attend Cal-Tech and obtain a doctorate degree in electromagnetic physics and a subsequent career in research. |
