Roosevelt student honored for community service

Roosevelt High School student Robin Provorse is one of five North East School District pupils to be named Volunteers of the Year at their respective high schools under the 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Provorse is recognized for helping the disabled. Each student receives a certificate of merit and now is eligible for the Texas Youth Volunteer of the Year awards.

Ed White eighth-grader wins top prize

Students from North East ISD participated with student citywide in the Education on Demand Rally Oct. 15 at the AT&T Center. Various local celebrities and national renowned celebrities spoke to the students about their own educational experiences and the value of education in the lives of children.

A citywide competition for middle school students was held prior to the rally. Ed White Middle School eighth-grader Paris Singleton placed first in the poetry division of the competition. Paris received an iPod from the city of San Antonio, and was presented with a scholarship certificate to attend St. Philip’s College at the close of her high school senior year.

Local trustee attends TASB event

Edd White of the North East School District was among a group of school board members gathering in Austin Nov. 9-10 to focus on the role of advocacy in achieving educational excellence. Trustees, who met for the second of five training sessions of Leadership TASB, began their activities by touring the state Capitol and participating in a mock legislative hearing.

Randolph student tapped for leadership seminar

Randolph High School sophomore David Grieder has been selected to represent the campus at the Gold Youth Leadership Program seminar June 5-8 in San Antonio. The seminar will involve more than 200 other top sophomores in Texas, each representing a different high school, and the delegates will benefit from interaction and motivational activities at the annual event.

The all-expense paid seminar will feature leaders in business, government, education and the professions who will address the students about the economic system and the democratic process. In addition, ways to improve personal skills will be presented. Delegates will also meet in small groups to discuss topics presented by the speakers and will have an opportunity to express their own thoughts and ideas.

The seminar is supported by service organizations such as Kiwanis, Optimists and the Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs as well as area businesses.

Local students do well in band auditions

On Nov. 10, more than 100 students from Dobie and Corbett junior high schools participated in the Texas Music Educators Association’s Junior High School Region Band and Orchestra auditions at Driscoll Middle School.

These young musicians competed against hundreds of other students from the surrounding area to earn spots in two region bands. Those placing high enough in the region band also earned a spot in one of two orchestras. The results are listed below:

From Region Band 2/Dobie: Caitlin Baumgarten, Zachary Benke, Anthony Blumenthal, Robert Gruber, Jessica Hall, Brett Hopkin, Aruna Kharod, Julia Mace, Sarah Pangrac and Evan Poe;

Region Band 2/Corbett: Randall Blair, Zachary Dickson, Marai Hayes, Todd Heeg, William “Billy” Miele, Kacie Petrequin, Mason Price, Karen Rico and Nick Sirak;

Region Band 1/Dobie: Molly Baskin, Kristen Gray and Marie Sells;

Region Band 1/Corbett: Christopher McCloskey and Gaige Murillo (first chair clarinet)

The following students placed high enough to earn spots in the region orchestra as well as the top region band: Baskin, McCloskey, Murillo and Sells.

This additional group of students also earned a district patch, but did not receive placement in region bands: Ana Keany, Katie Krauss and Ross Treviño, all of Corbett Corbett; and Nicholas Leyva and Mario Torres, both of Dobie.
