Friday

The Marion FFA will hold its “Steak ‘N’ Chops” fundraiser dinner from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Marion Middle School cafeteria. The meal, which includes a choice of ribeye steak or double-cut pork chop, will be prepared by Next Door Catering. Cost: $12 per adult, $5 per child 11 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from any FFA member or booster member.

American Legion Post 593, 326 Legion Drive in Converse, will host its monthly steak dinner from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $10 per person.

Mark Swayze will perform from 7-9 p.m. at Windcrest United Methodist Church’s monthly coffee house/Christian music showcase. The performance will be in the church’s community hall, 5461 Walzem Road near Midcrown Drive. Free, open to the public; donations appreciated. Call: 656-3593.

Saturday

The first-ever Family Day will run 3-5 p.m. at Fields of Dover Neighborhood Park, corner of Iron Mill Creek and Morning Grove Drive. Presented by Bexar County ESD No. 1 and County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson, Family Day includes free hot dogs and refreshments, music, face-painting, moon bounce and Sheriff’s Department child finger-printing. At 3 p.m., the Woodlake Hills Middle School Band will play, and at 4 p.m., Ballet Folklorico de San Antonio will perform.

Walgreens in Schertz, at 3801 FM 3009, is having a Pet Photo Shoot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A trophy and gift basket will go to the Most Photogenic Pet. $5.99 gift bags available, which include a 5-by-7 photo and a pet toy; $5 of the cost is being donated to a national animal charity.

A Southern gospel music concert, featuring the Cross Point Quartet from Bryant, Ark., starts at 6 p.m. at Kirby Baptist Church, 5114 Old Seguin Road. Love donation; contact Norma Burton, 654-9694 or 373-4529.

Church of the Resurrection Episcopal will hold its annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the church grounds, 5909 Walzem Road. Admission is free. There will be loads of crafts, food and fun. Call: 655-5484.

Alamo Exhibition Bird Show takes place 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Live Oak Civic Center, 8101 Pat Booker Road. Admission: $3; free for children age 12-under.

Windcrest Animal Hospital offers low-cost vaccinations for dogs and cats 9-11 a.m. at Wal-Mart, Nacogdoches Road and Loop 1604, and 12:30-2 p.m. at Polly’s Pet Shop, 940 Pat Booker Road.

Sunday

VFW Post 8315 in Schertz will host a car wash beginning at 8 a.m., benefiting the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Suggested donation is $5. The VFW Post is located at 1000 FM 78. Contact: Monica Monette, 771-9453.

Tuesday

Spay-Neuter Assistance Program offers low-cost procedures for dogs and cats at Live Oak Animal Control, 8001 Shin Oak Drive. Pets should be dropped off by 7:30 a.m. in a carrier or pillowcase. Call: 673-7722.

Oct. 2

The first-ever Guadalupe County 4-H Volunteer Orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Guadalupe County Extension office, 210 E. Live Oak in Seguin. The theme is “Under the Big Top,” in which volunteers will be introduced to a variety of opportunities available to them through 4-H. Oct. 3

The Krueger Elementary PTA will hold its annual fund-raising Fall Festival from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Marion Middle School Cafeteria. The festival will feature games, a bake sale, silent auction and a pork steak dinner.

Oct. 4

The Universal City United Methodist Church, 90 Winn Ave., is holding an Arts and Crafts Show Oct. 4 and is seeking crafters/vendors. Cost: $35 for a 6-foot table and one chair. The 34 Foundation is sponsoring a golf tournament Oct. 4 at Woodlake Golf Club, 6500 Woodlake Parkway. Cost is$100 per person and $375 per foursome. Oct. 7

Bracken United Methodist Church’s health ministry is sponsoring a Family and Friends CPR Class from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the church, 20377 FM 2252 (one mile north of FM 3009). Oct. 13

The Nutrition Wellness Group meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Northampton subdivision clubhouse, 8265 Manderly Place. Learn how to improve your health through diet and lifestyle modification. Presenter will be Valerie Kirksey, a clinical nutritionist.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

The Converse Animal Shelter, a non-profit/no-kill organization, needs “Christmas elves” to help sew Christmas stockings. Simple straight -line stitching can be done in your home; contact CASI, 9634 Schaefer Road, at 658-4821.

Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will be accepting field crops, garden crops, orchard crops and home products for judging for this year’s Guadalupe County Fair. The newly formed Guadalupe County (Schertz/Seguin) chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will have a plant exchange and “meet and greet” at 6:30 p.m., with program to follow at 7 p.m., on Oct. 14.
