Schertz woman runs to raise cancer-research funds

Mary Hesse of Schertz will run in the Nike Women’s Marathon Oct. 21 in San Francisco as a member of Team In Training. The mission of Team in Training is to provide funding for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s research to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

The research that the society has sponsored has been the catalyst for revolutionary treatments for these blood cancers and other cancers, including breast and lung cancer.

Hesse is currently in the process of raising money to offset the cost of traveling to California. Election set to create ESD

Comal County Commissioners last week passed a petition and called a Nov. 6 election to create the Comal Emergency Services District No. 7. More than 2,500 voters will get to approve or reject the new ESD, which would its residents continue receiving emergency service in a swath of land between Schertz, New Braunfels and San Marcos’ extraterritorial jurisdiction.

If approved, the district would begin operation Jan. 1, 2008. A board of directors would then set a property tax rate between 3 and 10 cents per $100 valuation to fund the services. Referendum polling will be held at normal voting sites. Residents in the proposed district will cast their votes at one of six precincts within that boundary.

Schertz emergency team seeks volunteers

The Schertz Community Emergency Response Team is offering CERT basic training to all residents regardless of whether such individuals want to volunteer with the program.

Sponsored by the Schertz Fire Department, volunteer group members learn how to prepare for natural and artificial catastrophes, mitigate hazards, and what to do in response to disasters.
