Boerne-Champion may be 0-4 in district play, but that didn’t stop them from putting up a fight against the Steele Knights. But Steele’s depth; talent and determination ended the Chargers fight as they fell to Steele, 49-28, Oct. 17 at SCUCISD Stadium. With a huge District 27-4A showdown looming this weekend, as Kerrville Tivy awaits the visiting Knights Friday, Steele took care of business against Boerne with a balanced attack that included four rushing touchdowns and three passing scores. The Knights racked up 475 yards of total offense, 338 of those yards coming on the ground. After a quick Charger three-and-out to start the game, Steele only needed two plays to score, capping the short drive with a 53-yard slant pass from quarterback Jake Trevino to wide receiver Anthony Foster. Steele scored on five of its first six possessions, needing just 20 plays to record the five TDs. In the second quarter, running back Malcolm Brown found his groove, scoring on a 15-yard run to end a five-play, 79-yard drive. Brown only had six carries on the night but had 84 yards, averaging 14 yards per carry. Other Steele first-half scores included a 1-yard run by back Cory Anderson and two Jacob Trevino passes, the first to Anderson and the second another strike to Foster. With the win, Steele clinches a playoff berth for the second year in a row. “I feel good about the win,” Steele Coach Mike Jinks said. “That win secures us a playoff spot and that’s what it is all about; getting a win and getting into (the playoffs) and we have accomplished that. Now we’ve just got to get some guys healthy and continue to improve.” But it wasn’t all Steele in this one as the Boerne Champion Chargers 3-4 (0-4) made sure that everyone new that improvement was still possible for Steele. Champion scored on three of their first five possessions as well, including an impressive 12-play 80-yard drive that concluded with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Charger quarterback Chuck Thornally to wide receiver James Hurd. But two costly turnovers to end the half plagued Boerne, leaving Champion down 35-21 at halftime to a team it couldn’t stop. Steele backup running back Dana Givner stepped up in the second half, giving Tivy something else to worry about on Friday. Givner added a solid 92 yards and two second-half touchdowns on just 8 carries. The Knights played ins-pired team ball in the second half. Linebacker Hunter Flake also had a good game, picking off two Chargers passes, including a crowd-pleasing one-handed grab. Jinks said a new Steele player seems to step forward every week — one reason why the Knights have won 18 of their last 20 games as a varsity football program. |
