Carole Miller Photos and story by Carole Miller I was sitting at home, minding my own business when I got a call from North San Antonio Times Editor Steve Elliott. He wanted to know if I’d be interested in writing this column. Let me get this straight, I get to crash all the cool parties, be wined and dined by high society, rub elbows with the rich and talk about it? Suddenly I had a flashback to the sixth grade when several of my teachers told me that my big mouth would bring me nothing but trouble . . . Would I be interested? Well who wouldn’t? With that said, I attended the Hearts in Harmony Gala Feb. 8, hosted by the Friends of the Children’s Bereavement Center at the ever-posh San Antonio Country Club. The Bereavement Center is dedicated to helping young people and their families grieving the death of a loved one. Rich and Kitty Lange catch up with Barbara and Michael Gentry at the Hearts in Harmony Gala. I was greeted at the door with a big hug from Rich and Kitty Lange (both well known as the directors of the Acorn School). They first introduced me to Janie Worth who (unbeknownst to her) was being recognized that evening with the first-ever Volunteer Service Recognition Award. I had to keep it a secret, too! (This is not easy for me — refer to paragraph two.) I spoke with Bereavement Center Executive Director Traci Gomez on the sly about Janie’s award and she told me that Janie has worked with the center for more than six years. “We would not be here without her commitment,” she said. Just then, CBC Board President-Elect Jenifer Brown grabbed me and introduced me to everyone within shouting distance. I met Michael and Barbara Gentry, Kye and Lou Fox, Gala Vice President Sallie Chasnoff and CBC President Almeda Hodge. Janie Worth, Traci Gomez and Linda Fugit enjoy the Hearts in Harmony Gala Feb. 8. Worth was honored with the first-ever Volunteer Recognition Award that night. The very next thing I noticed was bacon. Seriously! The waiters were carrying around trays of appetizers and one culinary feature was simply a tray of bacon. This would seem strange except for the fact that each and every gentleman I spoke with asked me, “Have you tried the bacon?” (They all had delicious “bacon breath” and you could smell them coming!) And speaking of bacon, I could have chatted the night away with former Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe and his longtime friend Glenn Biggs. Glenn’s wife, Ann Biggs, and her good friend Joy Potts, were equally as charming. Talking with all of them made me feel like the belle of the ball! Ann Biggs, former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe and Joy Potts take part in the festivities at the Hearts in Harmony Gala hosted by the Children’s Bereavement Center at the San Antonio Country Club. And that brings me to one of my favorite events — the annual Symphony Belle Ball. This is one of the hottest tickets in town!
