Diane Shaw, Karel Hoffman and Christine Tyng in their black-and-white best. I’ve spent the last few weeks at so many parties my head is starting to spin. But, have no fear, dear readers, not only did I attend; I took notes and pictures. And I’m never afraid to drop names!
The Kappa Kappa Gamma/Pi Beta Phi Mixer was held at Julian Gold Feb. 15. I was warmly greeted by Kappa President Susan Hausser, Incoming President Day Smith and next year’s president Leslie Walter (who all offered to make me an honorary Kappa). I also ran into a few notable Pi Phis including Mary Ellen Archer and Jennifer Colglazier. And as I tried to make my way to the food table as many times as possible without looking too obvious, I saw my friend Jamie Weyand and got to meet Carolyn Mayo, Sara Ames and Jayne Clement. Liecie Hollis and Lisa Thurmond served as co-chairs at the Black, White and Bingo All Over luncheon.hristine Tyng in their black-and-white best. Throughout the party, Sherri Lubianski and Emily McDaniel modeled Julian Gold fashions and looked absolutely fabulous. But the most beautiful model wasn’t a model at all. Caitlin Lester was upstairs with my friends Barbie Roberts and Claire Reynolds. She was getting fitted for her debut at the Symphony Ball and looked breathtaking in her Romona Keveza gown. After whetting my appetite at the sorority mixer, I got all dolled up in my black-tie finest to attend the St. Peter’s Gala Feb. 17. And, to my delight, Arthur and Elvia Cavazos were there. Arthur is the president of Cavazos Public Relations & Advertising and he gave me my very first job in San Antonio. I felt so welcome at the St. Peter’s event. I met Msgr. Tom Murphy, Linda and Bob Kiolbassa, Valerie Cantu, Jay Gwin, Shirlie Kaats and gala committee members Annette and Charles Frigerio for starters. And I met more Knights of Columbus than you can shake a stick at. Let’s see, there was Phil Wilberg, Robert Eaton, Ed Hernandez, B and Bobby Acosta to name a few. The Knights of Columbus have often been referred to as the “strong right arm of the church” because of all support and philanthropic deeds.

Talk about special treatment, Irma even invited me to sit at the head table for dinner! My final party of the week was the Kappa Alpha Theta “Black, White and Bingo All Over” luncheon. Let me tell you, when the “ladies who lunch” decide to play bingo, they don’t mess around. I remember really hating bingo in school. But when you are playing for packages worth thousands of dollars, bingo gets much more interesting, trust me. Karel Hoffman did an amazing job as the prize chairman with prize packages including Spurs tickets, spa weekends, theater tickets and hotel stays. Bingo! Rick Cavender was the Master of ceremonies/bingo caller. I think it’s been a while since he played because he started out calling numbers WAY too fast. But he eventually slowed down and the games continued without a hitch. Kappa President Susan Hausser, Incoming President Day Smith and next year’s president, Leslie Walter, mix it up at the Kappa/Pi Phi mixer. As Heather Wolff and I walked around the room desperately searching for my table, I spotted several of my “school chums” including Liz Boldrick, Laura Schumacher, Arlene Kinsel, Diane Shaw and Tracey Ramsey-Bennett. I also got to meet Rick’s lovely wife, Suzanne Cavender, and ran into my new friend Almeda Hodge along with Claire Vaughan and Diane Smith.I must confess that going to all these sorority functions has left me pining away my lost youth as an Alpha Gamma Delta at the University of Georgia. (Go Dawgs!) If there are any other Alpha Gams out there, give me a shout out! (I can almost guarantee press coverage — I have some connections.)
