It’s that magical, wonderful time of year once again. That’s right — they’re going baaack!

But before all those little darlings headed back to their institutions of higher learning, the more sophisticated of the school-aged set threw some fabulous parties.

As everyone knows, the debutantes of San Antonio are presented to polite society at the Opening

German Gala in the spring. This season features 22 beautiful young ladies from the finest families.

The debutantes for the 2009 season were recently announced during a coffee reception at the San Antonio Country Club. They are Claire Ames, Whitney Bracher, Mattie Dutton, Fay Fitzsimons, Stuart Folkes, Mallory Geis, Elisabeth Hanson, Amelia Hausser, Carolyn Hinchey, Camilla Labatt, Rainey Mayo, Mary McGaughy, Chloe Ochse, Allye Peacock, Emily Perryman, Cates Piland, Mallory Rigney, Patti Ruiz-Healy, Elise Sasser, Hanna Sheesely, Alexa Smith and Christina Stith.

Then it was back to school with the Alamo Heights cheerleaders who got together for a mum-making party. (You didn’t think those mums made themselves, did you?)

Among the leaders of cheer at the party and their “mums” were Elizabeth Jones and Laura Mako, Jamie and Jamie Bloodsworth, Sammi and Jane Wakely, Jill and Ale Garcia, Morgan Hanley, Jenny Gough, Reid Stephens, Margaret Massari and Morgan Hanley.

Then the dedicated members of the FACE campaign (more AHISD “mums”) held a luncheon to discuss the business of education. Never one to pass up a free lunch, I joined Doreen Magoon, Sharon Adelman, Marnie Ross, Tracey Winter, Townsend Durbin, Dina McIlhenney, Carolina Morrell, Annie Lutz, Kelly Fellbaum, Debbie Vasquez, and Amy Dunn Smith.

During lunch I learned that FACE (For All Children … Excellence) is an annual campaign with the goal of

supplementing the AHISD’s annual budget by seeking community support for the district’s teachers. Their goal this year is to raise more than $400,000 (and it’s a great cause) so get ready to get out your checkbook during back-to-school night!

Speaking of school days, my alma mater, the University of Georgia, which is also the alma mater of a few other local legends such as former Express-News publisher Larry Walker, Caroline Walker and Rob Holliday, is ranked number one right now in the Associated Press Top 25!
