By: June “Bug” Special Correspondent After having been showered with many blessings all spring and summer, and with a hint of fall in the air, it is time to fill up your calendar with dates and times of upcoming fun and interesting events. There is much to choose from, some ongoing and some new activities to whet your interest. On Sept. l7, we will have a podiatrist as the speaker for our Monday luncheon so we can all learn how to take better care of our feet. Also on that same day, the Encore group will have their usual meeting at l p.m. They will not be performing as stated on your calendar. All of you bingo players take note: the board has approved an increase in the dues from $l to $2 beginning Sept. l8. Tai Chi class began Sept. 5, with 25 students enrolled. The class will meet every Wednesday at 8 a.m. for one hour. There was an excellent response to this class, and we wish to thank Tonie Rogers for all of her hard work in bringing this successful program to BSC. Someone has suggested we have a trades day every two months on a Monday during games and lunch. A sign up sheet is available if interested, with detailed information so we will all know what a Trades Day is. Another idea is to have a movie day twice a month, so sign up for it if interested. Another Saturday morning pancake breakfast will be on Sept. 29 from 8 to 11 a.m. Come and bring your family, friends and neighbors for a great way to start your weekend. This is one of our most popular fund-raisers. We are having a Style Show on Oct. l3 and we want you ladies in the community to please consider coming for a most enjoyable afternoon. It will be held at the Gathering Place on State Highway 46 from l to 4 p.m. Fall apparel will be provided by Sassy Spur, Cristal’s, and Two Chic Chicks, styles for all ages and modeled by some of our local business employees and some of our senior members. We have had several style shows in the past and it has been such a fun time, having a wonderful lunch and watching the models all the while thinking about which item we would like to have, or if not, for someone we know, or just enjoying the whole show. Tickets are $20 and are available at the above named businesses or at the Senior Center. According to the July-August 2007 AARP Bulletin, many boomers in their 50s and 60s tend not to sign up for senior center membership because they don’t appreciate the moniker, which is often associated with being old. Those are the very individuals that BSC needs as members to keep our center alive and serve on the board, volunteer, and bring their family and friends. We are very aware that some of our current members tend to get discouraged at the thought of changing our name, but as a business decision how else are we going to attract these 50- and 60-somethings that our center will desperately need. A sheet is available on the table at the center to list your suggested name, IF it is decided by membership in January to make a name change. |
