National Blood Donor Month highlights importance of donating blood regularly
Tuesday, 08 January 2008
Throughout the month of January, South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and blood transfusion recipients across the country recognize and thank blood donors through the annual celebration of National Blood Donor Month.
Only thirty-seven percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but less than ten percent actually do. It is through the commitment of regular blood donors that blood centers across the nation are able to meet hospital needs. In fact, approximately 39,000 units of blood are used in the United States each day in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, organ transplant recipients, and accident victims.
Upcoming community blood drive:
Bulverde Bracken Christian School Friday, January 25; Noon- 4:00pm In the parking lot; 670 Old Boerne Road
Before donating, each donor receives a mini-physical, consisting of a blood pressure and iron level check, temperature and pulse evaluation. Following the donation, donors will receive information in the mail regarding their blood type and overall cholesterol level.
Donors must present identification. Anyone 17 years of age weighing at least 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood. Donors should eat before and after their donation and drink plenty of fluids. Fasting is not recommended.
