Pedernales Electric’s Partners in Learning program has awarded $1,000 to the Comal Public School Foun-dation, which serves students enrolled in the Comal ISD.
“Students deserve to have engaging programs that cultivate a desire to excel in and out of the classroom,” PEC assistant general manager Jeanell Davis said. “Partners in Learning helps to make these programs possible through contributions to education foundations in our service area.”
Education foundations were established to benefit students in local school districts. Funds from the foundations are used for special instructional programs that otherwise would not exist.
Partners in Learning is part of PEC’s continuing effort to provide educational opportunities for area youth. Pedernales Electric also awards scholarships each year to local students and is an annual sponsor of the Youth Tour Contest that sends winners to Washington, D.C.
PEC members and other area residents can go to www.pec.coop for information about the Comal Public School Foundation and to learn how to make their own contributions to the foundations.

GVTC played host to the kickoff of this year’s Bulverde/Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce leadership class during a daylong event on Sept. 26.
Leadership Bulverde-Spring Branch provides education and leadership development for a select group of civic-minded individuals over a nine-month period.
Participants are required to attend monthly full-day classes to graduate. Each class focuses on a topic of current community interest, often including a tour, as well as the development of a personal skill critical for effective community leadership.
Participants are expected to complete a community project by the end of the program.
Leadership Bulverde-Spring Branch was spearheaded by Ola Armstrong, GVTC director of public relations, two years ago and she has taken an active role in shaping this effort ever since. Her work ensures a strong group of trained leaders will serve Bulverde-Spring Branch for years to come.
“As a leader in the community, GVTC would like to see other people in our community become leaders. These leadership sessions provides them with the confidence to step up to the plate and make a difference,” Armstrong said.
Ritchie Sorrells, GVTC CEO, helped welcome the group and spoke about GVTC’s commitment to community involvement. Sorrells also reflected on his leadership training through the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and how it affected his life.
In addition to providing use of its board room for the event, GVTC donated $1,000 to the leadership class to help with its operation costs.
Members of the 2007 Bulverde/Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class are Kathleen Banse, Susan Jones, Betty Barr, Julie Kneupker, Kim Boren, Cindy McNutt, Darlyn Brown, Georgia Moore, Cynthia Cross, Machelle Salmon, Daniel Deviney, Rose Schmidt, Stefanie Doyer, Erika Sykes, John Ellis, Sam Roberts, Robert Evans, Tom White, Thomas Hotaling and Richard Yount.

Special to the Bulverde News
More than 250 Hill Country business owners filled the GVTC Auditorium Aug. 28 for an evening of networking and camaraderie.
GVTC has hosted a chamber mixer for several years, but this is the second year in a row the Canyon Lake, Bulverde/Spring Branch Area and Hill Country Chambers of Commerce have all come together to mingle at the same time. The multi-chamber mixer provides a unique opportunity for members of our three regional chambers to make new connections by meeting face to face.
Ola Armstrong, GVTC director public relations, said the gathering was a great opportunity for GVTC to continue its role as an ambassador for business relationships and community causes.
“We support so many community functions other than our local chambers of commerce, but we are definitely involved in all three chambers very heavily,” Armstrong said.
The fiesta themed event featured an enchilada buffet, hors d’oeuvres and plenty of cold beverages. Chamber members who attended also had a chance to win numerous door prizes.
Larry Finkle, president of the Bulverde/Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce, handled announcements for his group. Finkle also introduced Shelly Talamantez, a 2007 graduate of the Bulverde/Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce Lea-dership Group. This year’s Leadership Group has adopted the Bulverde/Spring Branch Area Food Pantry for its community project. They used the mixer to kick off their “Got 5?” promotion to support the food pantry and raised $330.50 toward their goal of $5,000
Jaynellen Ladd, president of the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce, introduced six new members to the audience.
Lauri Sinor, director of the Hill Country Chamber of Commerce, officially represented her group at the mixer.
