 Dr. Rachel Beddard Special to the Medical Patriot Dr. Rachel Beddard will fill the newly created position of vice president for medical affairs and Shari Miller is being promoted to vice president for donor recruitment at the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. The announcement was made Oct. 9 by Dr. Norman D. Kalmin, president/CEO and medical director of the center. “Dr. Beddard and Ms. Miller have a proven track record of success here at the center,” Kalmin said. “They have implemented unique and successful programs that have attracted donors and enhanced our quality. They are established leaders among our staff. We know they will both excel in their new roles and augment the development of the center.”  Shari Miller Beddard has been with the blood and tissue center since June 2005 and first served as the medical director of the Texas Cord Blood Bank, a center division. In 2007, Beddard became the center’s associate medical director where she has assisted in establishing medical policies related to the selection and care of blood donors, collection, processing and storage of cord blood, medical direction of the bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell program and consultation with hospital transfusion services.
As vice president for medical affairs, Beddard will be responsible for the daily supervision of donor services to include planning, managing and coordinating the operations of the donor services, apheresis and the Victoria branch facility. Her responsibilities will also include medical consultation for the Texas Cord Blood Bank, National Marrow Donor Program, Hospital Services and the Special Procedures and Microbiology laboratories. Beddard received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in 1999. She is certified in clinical pathology and is a member of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Medical Association. She is also the recipient of the 2002 CAP Foundation Young Leader Award, the 1999 Robert J. Faulconer Award for Excellence in Pathology and the 1999 Desmond R.H. Gourley Award for Excellence in Pharmacology. As vice president for donor recruitment, Shari Miller is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the donor recruitment and apheresis recruitment programs. She will report directly to the vice president for medical affairs. Prior to her appointment, Miller served as the blood and tissue center’s director of donor recruitment since 2004. Miller has more than 13 years of experience in donor recruitment for blood centers, having served in several donor recruitment director and supervisory positions both at the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and at Carter BloodCare in Bedford, Texas. Miller has a Bachelor of Arts degree in humanities and communication from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Master of Arts degree in communications from the University of Incarnate Word. She is currently a member of the American Association of Blood Banks and the Association of Donor Recruitment Professionals. |
