Boerne Parks and Recreation is taking reservations from groups wishing to be in this year’s Boerne Christmas parade on Dec. 6. Cibolo Nature Center presents “Geology Short Course: Limestone Geology and Geologic History of Our Area” from 9 a.m. to noon at Cibolo Nature Center auditorium. Dr. Bill Ward, University of New Orleans emeritus professor of geology, presents the vital basics: Why we have so much limestone in the Edwards Plateau and how our rocks control topography, soils, vegetation, aquifers and the very culture of our Texas Hill Country. Boerne Public Library offers a computer class on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Students will learn all about the Microsoft Office program Excel, an electronic spreadsheet for accounting functions. Students should know how to use a mouse, as well as have at least a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products in order to take this class. On Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. students will be getting an overview of desktop publishing with Microsoft Office 2007. Students need to know how to use a mouse, as well as have at least a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Each class is taught on a first-come, first-served basis; sign up about 15 minutes before class. If you have taken the classes twice before, you are no longer eligible to take them. FRIDAY

Aue Elementary School’s first annual Gatorfest will be Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the school in Leon Springs. It will be a PTA fundraiser to take the place of catalog sales. The evening’s events include: Rudy’s barbecue plates, performance by Radio Disney, a silent auction, carnival-style games for kids and other activities.

The Texas Non-Fiction Writers’ Retreat 2008 will be held at the Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne. Cibolo Nature Center presents “Attracting Birds” from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Presenter will be Dick Park, local birder and land manager. Learn how to attract and enjoy nesting, migrating and wintering birds on your Hill Country land. The Parks have documented over 160 birds species on their property! After a presentation and discussion on bird seed, feeders, boxes and bird census opportunities, go outside to see successful examples of bird feeder and water placement, bird boxes and brush piles.

Leon Springs Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Leon Springs Baptist Church, 24133 Boerne Stage Road, behind H-E-B.

The 16th annual Key to the Hills Antique Show will be held at the Kendall County Fairgrounds in Boerne. Many fine dealers featuring an elaborate array of collectibles, antiques, jewelry, rare books, vintage linens, primitives, glass and much more will be offered for a $6 admission covering both Saturday and Sunday. SUNDAY

Czech Heritage Day Festival is set Oct. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Come enjoy an afternoon of great music, food, games, and displays. The festival will be at KC Hall, 5721 Rigsby, Highway 87 East near Loop 410 in southeast San Antonio. A Czech meal will be served for $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10. The menu is pork roast, sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, and peaches. Drinks, kolaches and desserts will be available. Cibolo Nature Center presents “Geology Short Course: Hydro-geology of the Trinity Aquifer” from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 30 at Cibolo Nature Center.

To sustain the quality and quantity of our water, we need to understand the special character of limestone aquifers. Dr. Bill Ward will present the basic hydrogeology of Trinity Aquifer, the system that provides our ground water and interacts with surface water of Texas Hill Country springs and streams. This will be followed by a field trip to discuss the hydrogeologic system within the local limestone at nearby Herff Falls Ranch. Cost: Members $15 a person and non-members $20 a person per session.
