The Boerne Champion Chargers host Seguin Friday night with their playoff hopes on life support.

After losing to Steele and falling to 0-4 in district, the Chargers learned they still have a mathematical chance at the league’s fourth playoff spot, but only if they win out and both Clemens and New Braunfels Canyon stumble more than once down the stretch. Even if that happens and the race ends with a three-way tie for fourth place, the final playoff spot would come down to a complicated tie-breaker involving point differential.

Boerne has already played the top four teams in the district, while Canyon and Clemens still have some of their toughest teams ahead. While the league has no easy touches, the Chargers are also counting on the return of quarterback Chuck Thornally to spark them down the stretch.

One thing is certain. None of the end-of-season calculations will amount to anything if Boerne does not win this week.

“The first step is Seguin,” Charger Head Football Coach Danny Threadgill says. “We’ve got to take care of our own business.”

“As seniors, we’ve got at least three games left and that’s motivation enough,” Boerne defensive back Drew Roumelis said. “Most of us aren’t going to play after high school, so for us it’s our last shot.”

“We feel like we should win out,” fellow defensive back Dakota Mitchell said. “It’s also a pride issue. We know we’re better than the way we’ve played.”

Seguin is 1-6 overall and 0-4 in district, but the Matadors gave Clemens a run for its money last week before falling 28-14. Like Boerne, Seguin has also run the gauntlet of the district’s best teams.

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at the Boerne ISD stadium.
