By Linda Byrne Editor The past and the future will be in the spotlight on Nov. 30 during a “Medieval Christmas in Leon Valley,” a night of storytelling and fund-raising for the public library. The event begins at 8 p.m. at the Leon Valley Conference Center, 6427 Evers Road. For the $5 admission price, attendees can hear “Maid Martha” — stand-up historian and author Martha Hannah — who will present a fast-paced multimedia educational segment. “With her hair-raising tales, jokes, songs and hilarious audience participation, Maid Martha makes the Middle Ages and Renaissance come alive,” said library director Joyce M. Trent. In addition, a photo exhibit, “The Art of Chivalry: European Arms and Armor,” part of a traveling exhibit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, will have its opening night the same evening. “The exhibit explores the art and age of chivalry, the nature of chivalric warfare and the heritage of the chivalric code,” Trent said. The exhibit contains 27 color and 40 black and white photographs. The exhibit will remain at the library for about a week after the event. San Antonio’s Merrie Court Singers will entertain with period choral music. Refreshments will be served and attendees are encouraged to come in period costumes. Funds raised at the event will go toward a new children’s wing at the Leon Valley Public Library. The Friends of the Library will be accepting gifts and pledges for the Children’s Wing building fund. Checks should be made payable to Friends of the Leon Valley Public Library Building Fund. All donations are tax-deductible. |
