The city of Helotes took a cue from San Antonio and banned the use of cell phones in school zones. San Antonio started a pilot program last month that outlaws cell phone use in 18 public and private school zones throughout the city. Full enforcement of those zones begins Oct. 31. In Helotes, following the posting of signs and a 10-day grace period, those who are cited for using a cell phone while operating a moving vehicle are subject to a $200 fine for the first offense and $500 for the second. Mayor Tom Schoolcraft said that Helotes Police Department officers intend to enforce the ordinance. The city of Leon Valley has discussed passing a similar ordinance. Northside Independent School District supports the ban. “Northside ISD supports the efforts to ban the use of cell phones in school zones,” said spokeswoman Karen Adler. “Of course, we have concerns about all drivers who are distracted and could potentially put a child at risk.” |
