Northwest Vista College is hosting Gabriel Alegría’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet, one of the most influential jazz groups in Peru, as part of the Black History Month. Two lecture demonstrations and master classes on Afro-Peruvian music and cultural history will be presented at Northwest Vista College in the student lounge at Huisache Hall: “Afro-Peruvian Musical Ideas and Instruments” 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and “Afro-Peruvian Culture and its History” 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. “Afro-Peruvian Music and Dance,” open master class, will be conducted 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in the hall’s banquet room. The Friends of Government Canyon Volunteers, the second Saturday of each month, conduct a guided five- to seven-mile hike on one of the many trails at the State Natural Area. Meet at the visitor center at 8:30 a.m. The trails are rough and rocky, so wear boots or sturdy hiking shoes. Bring water and a snack. Participants must be 13 or older.
