Government Canyon Natural Area offers “Guided Hike to the Protected Habitat.” Members of the Recreation and Education Committees of the Friends of Government Canyon will lead a hike to the Protected Habitat starting at 8:30 a.m. An interpreter will be available to answer questions. Participants must be at least 14 years of age and physically able to hike 12 to 13 miles over broken, rocky terrain with a good portion of elevation gain and loss. The hike will last until around 3 p.m., depending on participants. Dress in layers appropriate to the weather. Carry at least three liters of water per person, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat, and raingear. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. Participation is limited. Reservations are required. and any interested animal welfare groups are invited to a planning meeting for the 2008 Bow Wow Meow Luau at 2 p.m. at H-E-B Central Market (community room), Broadway near Hildebrand Avenue.

Jan. 19

Learn how to avoid being a victim of identity theft or what to do if someone has stolen your identity. Kate Deaver, with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater San Antonio, will address concerns and questions in her identity theft program at the Maverick Library on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. Registration is requested. Ongoing Texas Cooperative Extension

(Bexar County) will be conducting its first annual green industry class next year and now is taking registrations. This class is open to all green industry professionals who want to increase their knowledge in all aspects of the green industry: lawn care and maintenance; landscape management; and retail and wholesale nursery sales. Learn how to leverage your skills and update your knowledge with the most recent best practices available from state and local experts in their respective fields of horticultural services. Deadline to register is Jan. 15 and classes run every first and third Friday of each month from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Feb. 1 to June 20 at 3355 Cherry Ridge, Suite 208, San Antonio.
