‘Mano a Mano’ event benefits Seton Home Want eating out to be fun and meaningful at the same time? Then here is the perfect opportunity for San Antonio area diners. An event called “Mano a Mano” takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Beto’s Comida Latina, located at 8142 Broadway. The evening will be a combination of food and Mexican folk music, all in a casual atmosphere. Beto’s will donate 10 percent of the evening’s proceeds from food sales to benefit Seton Home, a home for homeless pregnant and parenting teens, 12 to 19 years old, who have decided to keep and care for their babies. “We want to do all that we can to help these teenage girls get through this very difficult time in their lives and to educate them to be able to care for themselves and their babies in the best way possible,” said Seton Home executive director Margret Starkey. “This will be a fun way to eat great food, enjoy traditional Mexican folk music and help Seton Home at the same time,” added Albert Mijangos, owner of Beto’s. For more information about the event, contact Patsy Sasek at 533-3504, ext. 229. To learn more about Seton Home, visit the Web site at www.setonhomesa.org. SAC offers free music theory classes for high school grads The San Antonio College Music and Humanities Department offers a free, month-long music theory college preparatory Head Start program, meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, from July 2 through August 3 The program is primarily for recent high school graduates who attended public high schools that did not offer an Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course. The program is offered free of charge, without benefit of outside funding, and includes all materials. “Participants are recommended by their high school band and choral directors or private teachers for the opportunity,” said Dr. Jessica Howard, Chairperson of the Music and Humanities Department. “They must have plans to attend a four-year institution in the fall of 2007 as music majors.” Howard said her department is offering this program because students who are strong in music performance and are accepted into four-year colleges are often weak in music theory, and a lack of preparation in music theory can stand in the way of their completing a degree in music. Applications are currently being considered in the Department of Music and Humanities at San Antonio College for the summer 2007 program.
