The Alamo Heights High School Mules baseball team continued their postseason run, winning the Region IV 4A Area title by sweeping a double header from the Lake Travis Cavaliers at the Mule Yard last week.

Senior catcher Charlie Thaddeus, starting in place of the injured Mundo Sanchez, singled home the game winner in the bottom of the sixth of the second game to provide the winning margin in a 3-2 victory – clinching the best-of-three series two games to one for the Mules.

Following a demoralizing 11-0 loss at the Lake Travis diamond in Friday’s first tilt, the Mules returned home needing to take both games Saturday to advance. They knotted the series 1-1 with a 4-3 win on senior Adam Bridgeman’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.

The Mules had jumped to a 3-0 lead after five frames, but Lake Travis fought back in the sixth as shortstop Chance Ruffin crushed a three-run homer off the centerfield scoreboard. Mules pitcher Randol Tellkamp held the Cavaliers scoreless the rest of the way, finishing with a complete game, 11-strikeout performance as Bridgeman closed it.

After being down 2-1 in Saturday’s second game following a two-run homer by Cavaliers catcher Zach Wieczyk in the top of the fifth, the Mules rallied in their half of the sixth. Senior Shay Hisle singled and moved to second on Connor Cook’s sacrifice. Junior David Rodriguez tied it at two with a sharp RBI single, and two batters later Thaddeus stroked a two-out hit to plate the go-ahead run. Sophomore pitcher Preston Whitley then retired the Cavaliers in the top of the seventh to finish his complete-game triumph.

The Mules now face a tough New Braunfels Canyon squad in the Regional Quarterfinals beginning tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Games two and three (if necessary) follow on Friday and Saturday, both at 7:30 p.m. All games will be played at the SAISD field next to Burbank High School.
