Today

Pecan Valley Neighborhood Association will have a meeting at 7 p.m., at Pecan Valley Elementary School. Guest will be Willie Gaines, who will give a presentation on East Central ISD Social Services Dept., and State Rep. Roland Gutierrez. Plans for National Night Out will be discussed. 

Health Screen Specialists is having a stroke prevention and vascular disease screening today at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 16506 Kilowatt Road, Elmendorf, Tex. They will also have health screenings tomorrow at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 814 Ruiz St.

Saturday

LULAC’s Concilio de Justicia Le (Council No. 4631) will hold its third annual Tardeada, from 4 p.m. to midnight, at VFW No. 76, 10th St. at Broadway. The tardeada will be raising funds to purchase products to be included in “appreciation packages” mailed to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The project is in honor of Sgt. Matthew Elias Mendoza, who was recently killed in Afghanistan. Sgt. Mendoza was the grandson of Amador Mendoza, who is a life-time member of VFW Post No. 76.

Highland Park Neighborhood Association will have a meeting at 10 a.m., in the Recreation Center at Highland Park Center. A representative from H-E-B will answer questions about the new store at McCreless Mall. There will be updates on the National Night Out to be held at the recreation center on Oct. 7.

East Central School Foundation is having its annual public meeting from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in the East Central ISD boardroom/ museum. It is located at the corner of Foster and New Sulphur Springs roads. Call 648-7861.

Little Stinker’s Pooch Palace, located at 3302 Tillie Drive, will have its semi-annual craft and rummage sale today and tomorrow. It will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Booths are available for $10 a space. The event includes auctions and pet adoptions, and will help the American Greyhound Association. Call 648-9364.

Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, 10750 Pleasanton Road, hosts two free programs: “Kids’ Birding 101” from 9 to 11 a.m., and “Drip Irrigation” from 2:30 to 4 p.m. It’s free admission but reservations required for either program. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9186, at 650 VFW Blvd., will have a free dance from 4 to 9 p.m. Conjunto Solucion will provide music. VFW Post 9186 is located across from Mission County Park directly behind the Mission Drive-in Theater. The dance will be in the front hall.

S.V.D.P. fundraiser at Mission Espada Hall, 10040 Espada Road, will be today. There will be a plate sale, and mini-flea market and Mexican bingo. The flea market starts at 8 a.m. The food and bingo is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 627-9883 or 627-2100.

KJZT Society No. 38 and KJT No. 102 will have a meeting at Holy Name Activity Center, 3814 Nash Blvd. The meal will be served at noon. Members of the KJZT are asked to bring a dessert. The meeting will follow the meal.

Monday

Spay-Neuter Assistance Program will offer low-cost procedures for dogs and cats today at H-E-B, 3323 Southeast Military Drive, and Wednesday at H-E-B, 721 Castroville Road. Pets should be dropped off by 7:30 a.m. in a carrier or pillowcase. Call 673-7722.

Brackenridge High School PTSA will have a meeting today in the Brackenridge High School cafeteria at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday

MASSA Health Ministries is having Diabetes Education-Prevention classes beginning Sept. 17. It will be at Emmanuel Presbyterian Fellowship Hall, 713 Division Ave. There will be a total of six workshops to increase knowledge and awareness of Diabetes. Call 922-7153.

Band of Brothers Organization is having its second annual “POW/ MIA Recognition Day” event on Sept. 20, at Connies Ice House, 1011 VFW Blvd. It is from noon to 5 p.m. The event is free and includes free hot dogs and military displays. Call Tony Huron at 772-3917.

VFW Post 837 is sponsoring its 28th annual “Community Chili Cook-off.” It will be Sept. 20, starting at 9 a.m. The deadline for final entry is noon on Sept. 20. The entry fee is $25. All chili entries must be cooked on-site from scratch. Judging will begin at 4 p.m. Breakfast will be served starting at 7 a.m., at the Post, 4436 Valleyfield Drive. Food booths and live music will be available throughout the day. VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 9186, will be having its annual cancer aid/ research fundraiser dance at the Post on Sept. 21. The dance will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with music by “Solucion” De Mike Villanueva. The Post is located at 650 VFW Blvd., between Mission County Park and the Mission Drive-in site.
