I am glad this past weekend is over. After watching the Spurs lose on Friday night, the Texas Longhorns drop a heartbreaker to Texas Tech on Saturday night and the Dallas Cowboys get thumped by the New York Giants on Sunday, I need something to put a smile on my face.

Believe it or not, watching the high school football playoff picture unfold in District 28-4A puts me in a real good mood. There are several great teams fighting for the playoffs.

Currently, you have Brackenridge with a 5-1 record sitting comfortably in position to take the league title. After that, the playoff picture has the potential to get really murky. Edison and Fox Tech both sit what seems to be comfortably at 4-2. Both teams hold their own fate and victories this weekend would secure playoff berths for both programs.

There is one problem with that scenario. This weekend, Edison plays a Jefferson team sitting at 3-3 in the district. Jefferson is also fighting for their playoff lives, and Fox Tech plays in the annual Chili Bowl against Lanier. Anything can happen in the Chili Bowl.

Both Burbank and Kennedy are at 3-3 in the district as well. Kennedy takes on Memorial who is winless so a victory seems to be almost a given. Burbank has the toughest time of the teams fighting for a playoff spot. They take on Brackenridge this week.

So let’s say that Jefferson beats Edison, Kennedy defeats Memorial, Lanier takes out Fox Tech, and Burbank upsets Brackenridge. All of those outcomes are most certainly possible.

That would create a tough, confusing scenario. You would have a five-way tie for the district runner-up slot, with all teams mentioned possessing a 4-3 record. Technically you could possess a tie for the runner-up slot and not make the playoffs in a four-team playoff system.

The real story here is Burbank, Kennedy and Jefferson were not considered playoff contenders prior to the start of the season. Burbank, Kennedy and Jefferson have played great this season and have gone through their stretch of adversities to get to this point of the season.

Despite who gets to the post season, one thing is for sure, you can bet this weekend will put a big smile on my face when the smoke clears and we finally see who has settled in the post season out of District 28-4A.
