 Florence LaVerne Hughes Florence LaVerne Hughes of Boerne, died Saturday. She was born Feb. 9, 1921, to Homer Sherwood Nichols and Lillian Alice Hearn Nichols. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Graham of Boerne; her brother, Marshall Nichols, and his wife, Bertha, of Austin; her sister, Alice Jean Smith, of Austin; grandchildren Laura Simon of Boerne and John Hudson and wife, Belinda, of San Antonio; great-grandchildren Kelby Magruder, Kris Huffman, Aaron Hudson, Kyle Simon, Lauren Hudson; great-great-grandchild Andrew Hudson; and numerous nieces and nephews across Texas. LaVerne graduated from Austin High School and then worked at the Texas Comptroller’s office. In later years, she worked as a claims manager for an insurance company in San Antonio. She and her late husband, Cecil Hughes, spent many weekends in Rockport fishing, and often spent endless hours teaching grandchildren and nephews how to fish in the Gulf waters. LaVerne enjoyed games and was the first to initiate a game of dominos, or cards with the children. She had a great faith in God, and her fun and loving spirit will be missed by many. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, Boerne. Reverend John Watson will officiate. Interment will be at Austin Memorial Park in Austin.
