TMI student honored in Rodeo’s Western art contest

Jaclyn Bowes, a freshman at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, is one of 10 student artists whose work was featured on note cards available at the recent San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

Bowes was one of 406 entrants in the Stock Show’s Western Art contest for Bexar County high school students. Her piece, “Into the Night,” a depiction of a herd of horses running, was among the top 50 entries selected for exhibit throughout the Stock Show in the Hall of Fame on the Freeman Coliseum grounds.

“Selection from the top 50 (for note cards) is based on how well they will reproduce and their appeal to the public,” said Nancy Kellner, chairwoman of the show’s Western Art Committee.

The note cards were available for purchase at the exhibit in packs of 10, representing each of the designs chosen. Cost per pack was $12, with proceeds benefiting the Stock Show’s general scholarship fund.

As one of the top 50 artists recognized, Bowes also will be invited to apply for a scholarship to the three-week Western Art Academy at Kerrville’s Museum of Western Art.

TMI musicians chosen for all-state groups

Two sisters, both students at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, were named to all-state music groups, chosen by the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA).

Christine Lamprea, a senior at TMI, was selected for the All-State Symphony Orchestra, the most prestigious of the orchestras, chosen on the basis of auditions last fall. Her sister Stephanie, a sophomore, was named first soprano with the All-State Mixed Choir.

Both sisters, daughters of Hugo and Maria Lamprea, performed with their groups Feb. 17 at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. More than 55,000 students enter the annual competition; only 220 instrumentalists were selected for the orchestra and 500 singers for the choir.
