Mertz
Boerne -If you walked into Brice Mertz classroom you might see him strolling among small groups of students as they engaged in excited conversation and think that you had come across a social studies class or a yearbook staff meeting. Other times you might see his class mesmerized by an imaginative lecture and presume an English class teacher was reading a great American literature passage. You would be wrong on both accounts. One of the bright stars at Boerne Middle School North is Brice Mertz, who is in his third year teaching Algebra I.

Mertz has a knack for making his students understand difficult concepts and he is legendary for his “stories” about humorous everyday events which are both entertaining and instructional. Mertz has a big heart, and whether a student is struggling with the subject matter, or working beyond the Algebra I level, Mertz truly cares for them. In his application to Boerne ISD he wrote:

“I believe that all students can learn especially if a teacher identifies the students’ different learning styles and adjusts the lesson to meet those styles. I also firmly believe that teaching without motivating is a huge injustice to the students. I believe it is critical for a teacher to inspire, motivate, and lead students to ask “why.”

All eyes and ears in the classroom are on Mertz when a new concept is being taught as no one wants to miss the short-cuts and math tricks that he shares with his students. Brice deftly guides his students to think at a higher level as he inspires and motivates them to learn.

In addition to his regular classroom teaching, Mertz provides tutorials to students during the day as well as before and after school. It is not at all unusual to see some of his former students, now in high school, come back to see him for help.
