Careful growthers v. growthers I went to the special called meeting regarding the Esperanza developers’ request that the Kendall Country Commissioners Court approve sending a letter to the legislature (a bill to be introduced by Sen. Jeff Wentworth and Rep. Nathan Macias) to expedite the process of creating a WCID (water district to fund the infrastructure) with an open mind because I am what some may call a “careful growther.” I thought perhaps someone would convince me that this development was a good idea for the city and county, but they did not. It should be obvious to Sen. Wentworth and Rep. Macias that, after two failed attempts to obtain a letter from the Kendall County Commissioners Court, this issue is not favored by the majority. Threats (unfounded) that this development is going to happen whether you like it or not, is not the way to get people to see your (growthers) side of things. Although some of you have lived here for many years, you did not state specifically how this development will benefit the city and county. It is disingenuous for a realtor to stand up for this project when there could be 2,480 houses for sale; and, yes, these homes could be for families who have the right to live wherever they chose. (Careful growthers acknowledge this fact and are not arrogant enough to state otherwise.) I have seen several e-mails referring to individuals who are skeptical about these proposed large developments as “no-growthers.” I am sure there are some people who do not want any growth whatsoever, but the majority (despite an unverified poll mentioned by a growther) want careful growth. I want to remind the “growthers” that the city’s Master Plan, as we were told during the numerous meetings, is not a law. It is a guideline to be used with careful planning and consideration. The Esperanza development, to date, does not fall under careful planning and consideration, and too many details are unresolved. In May, there will be an election for mayor of Boerne and two City Council seats. Remember, your vote counts as two votes so voting does make a difference! I call on all ‘careful growthers’ to get informed and vote for the individuals who will look out for the best interests of everyone in the community, and not only a select few, the growthers. I wish to thank the county commissioners for their actions, or should I say lack of action, on the Esperanza water issue. They have clearly shown to everyone in Kendall County, Sen. Jeff Wentworth and Rep. Nathan Macias their true colors. They would rather hide their heads in the sand than help in moving this county forward in a positive direction by working with considerate, responsible developers. They developer for the Esperanza subdivision is going to extreme efforts that include public parkland, trails and free land for schools, fire and police stations. If we discourage responsible developers from coming there then it will be our tax dollars buying land for schools, parks, fire and police stations to support the inevitable growth that s coming, and, yes, that would mean higher taxes. I wish to thank Sen. Wentworth, Rep. Macias and Kendall County Judge Gaylan Schroeder for their efforts to work with this developer. It is an embarrassment that our county commissioners are unwilling to work with responsible developers, and this is far from the first time.We all need to remember this next time at the voting booth. I read that three City Council people are being investigated for violations of the Texas Open Meetings Act. I’m not sure about all the mumbo-jumbo and wording, but the act states that you cannot have three council members present at any one meeting or presentation at a time other than council meetings. The sole purpose of the act is to prevent any type of collusion or deception. The three City Council people just so happened to be attending a meeting in January about transportation issues that affect all of us in the county. They were there as citizens, not council people. They were worried about our future transportation woes and were there to hear public comments, just like everyone else. I am appalled to hear that there was a snake in the grass that told on them. How juvenile. Now, three great people, who have given all of their free time to the citizens of Boerne, are being investigated for violating an act that is set up to deter deception. There was no closed meeting, discussing and deceiving by them. They didn’t even sit together. They were simply attending a meeting in order to hear transportation issues affecting our county. If this investigation goes any further, shame on you. Spending our tax dollars to investigate something as trivial as this, when everyone knows it was innocent, is downright wrong. How ironic that council elections are coming up in May. I’m sure many are scratching their heads wondering why someone went to such measures to accuse these innocent people of such an act. Wouldn’t you think people would use their time more wisely to do more positive things in this world? These three council people are getting a raw deal. They are great people with selfless hearts trying to do the job that Boerne wanted them to do. They’re doing it. Just let them continue their path and remember them on election day because we need them to help keep Boerne a wonderful and amazing place to live. Denise Herbst Boerne
