Nick Lammers of Alamo Heights High School (17) gets the ball past the Wimberly goalie. By Mary Candee Contributing Writer The Alamo Heights High School Mules boy’s varsity soccer squad has racked up an 8-6-3 overall record and is 6-5-3 in district play as they go into a match against undefeated first-place Dripping Springs Friday. Of Heights’ 17 games this season, the boys have had a total of 10 shut outs. The Mules boys shut out Wimberley, 7-0, March 6, with their first goal 13 minutes into the game. Ashton Roane scored the opening tally from a 15-yard shot with an assist from Jim Thompson, and scored his second goal seven minutes later with a 15-yard header off a cross from Adrian Alducin. Ashton’s brother, Brandon Roane, scored five minutes later from six yards out, from a well-placed cross by Junior David Garza. Going into the second half with a 3-0 lead, sophomore Michael Fields scored within five minutes on a breakaway, assisted by Andrew Bailey. Goal number five, and the second for Brandon Roane, came at the 19-minute mark with another assist by Jim Thompson. The last two goals were scored by sophomore Jorge Zerecero at the 24- and 38-minute marks, respectively. The first was a 15-yard shot on goal, and the last goal from a corner kick by Andrew Bailey. Friday’s match against New Braunfels Canyon went much differently. The first Heights goal of the game came within 30 seconds of the start, but was disallowed due to an offsides call. In the second half, Jim Thompson had a crucial clearance of a ball off the line to preserve the 0-0 tie. The final district rankings have yet to be decided, with the Mules vying between the tightly contended third through sixth places in the district. The Alamo Heights girl’s soccer team is now in third place after their recent loss last week to New Braunfels Canyon. Head coach Chris Sharp is happy with his team and “confident that they will play they way they are supposed to play.” The coach also commented on the district realignment. “It has been a tough season with the district realignment making the number of district teams twice a big as last year, meaning more district games early on and essentially wiping out the preseason opportunity to work out the kinks; we just played more conservatively.” The girl’s final district game will be at home Friday against Dripping Springs, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the junior varsity and varsity respectively. The boys will be on the road to Dripping Springs. The girls will be playing Steele High School Tuesday in the first playoff game in the Bi-District 4A playoff, with the time and location to be announced.
