Headbands are back with a vengence. By Bonny Osterhage Staff writer If you’ve been keeping up with the paper this month, we have addressed what to wear this spring from head to toe. We’ve covered dresses, tunics, wedges, peep-toes and platforms that are hotter than the South Texas sun. But what good is dressing up in all the latest spring fashions if you neglect to update your hair and makeup? You might as well serve a wedding cake without the icing. The eyes have it this spring with colors that say “come hither.” Green, blue, pink, champagne are the colors of the season and anything with a bit of opalescence will make your eyes shine. One caution: Do not confuse opalescence with frosted. Opalescence simply means a dewy sheen — not caked-on shiny coverage. Lola Skorman, makeup artist at Versi Salon at 5228 Broadway, suggests wetting the shadow brush before applying the colors to make them more youthful and vibrant and always keep the more intense colors near the lash line, getting lighter as you blend upward. For a little added evening drama, add a pearly white shadow just underneath the eyebrow, line the outer corners of the upper and lower lids with a black or brown waterproof pencil and finish off by lining the inside of the lower lid. For really special occasions, Skorman likes to add individual false eyelashes to the outer corners of the eyes. “They really make the eyes pop, while still looking natural,” she explains. Keep the lips natural in shades of nude or pink and by all means, ditch the lip liner! If you can’t bear to go without, stick to a shade very close to your own lip tone, apply it over the entire lip and add a touch of lip gel, preferably with a hint of gold. Blush like a lady with translucent cherry shades applied only to the apples of the cheeks. “It should look like when your grandma used to pinch your cheeks,” Skorman said. Once you are ready to put your spring face forward, show it off with a fabulous hairstyle. If you are ready for a change, this is the season to do it as styles are ranging from short crops with heavy bangs to longer lengths, bobs and even asymmetrical styles not seen since circa 1985. The right makeup is a must to spring forward beautifully. “Bobs are going to be huge,” says Ric Marmolejo, who has taken his once-elusive one-man show to an in-your-face fabulous salon at 5410 Broadway. Marmolejo, who has been delivering good hair days for 25 years, says this is not your mother’s bob. This look is “broken” and “shattered” and looks great at either chin or cheekbone length. You might also consider cooling the flat iron and get some va-va-voom. “Straight is still around, but it is a fuller straight,” Marmolejo said. “Velcro and hot rollers are going to be huge.” Then there is the must-have topper, the headband. “It’s back with a vengeance, but it’s not catholic-school-girl style,” says Marmolejo. “It must look like you just rolled out of bed and slipped the headband on.” Ponytails are another great way to accessorize but, again, nothing too contrived. Tease the crown of the head and then use your hand to brush through the hair and gather it into this sexy style. This is also the time to play with your color. For brunettes, Marmolejo suggests adding plum tones for shine and depth, while blondes should have lighter pieces running through the front of the hair. “Like you’ve been at the beach,” Marmolejo says. So now you have it, the finishing touches to your spring transformation. Everything is reborn in the spring. Why not you? To reach Lola Skorman, call 685-2405. For Ric Marmolejo, call 828-4407.
