A friend of mine said the only reason I took this job was for the food. So, when I got a call from Jennifer Colglazier inviting me to “A Gourmet Soiree,” a benefit for the Youth Literacy Foundation at the San Antonio Country Club, I jumped at the opportunity! Attend a cooking demonstration and delicious lunch with famous chef/author Nancy Wood Moorman? I am there!

Before we got down to business, I met co-chairs Lisa Sechler and Caroline Schupbach along with assistant chairs Betsy Baker and Margaret Gunn. The event was a huge hit! It was almost standing-room only, but I caught sight of my friends Paula Mays, Karel Hoffman, Suzanne Cavender, Elizabeth Worden, Mary Ellen Archer and Tracy Williams.

After that, I got a special invitation to the Cancer Center Council Friends luncheon from Rose Marie Banack. To call Rose Marie a public relations legend would be an understatement. If you don’t know who she is, you don’t get out much!

Rose Marie first introduced me to CCC board members Kelli Rigg and Anne Handren. Then I met event co-chairs Barbara Alexander and Dianna Roy, CCC Volunteer of the Year Barbara Haley and Dr. Karen Fields, CTRC president and CEO. I also spoke with CCC President Andi Rodriguez, Brenda Smith, Sheri Ortiz and my very good friend Molly Wilkes. She was there with her stepmother Andie Erben and friends Anne Ownby and Kelley Terry. They all looked positively smashing, if I do say so.

And although I didn’t see her, I know my friend Catherine Comeaux was there because I heard them announce her name as she won the door prize.

At my table, I made instant friends with Sara Kliewer, Mary Russell, and Betsy O’Connell. As we spoke, we discovered that Betsy’s son and daughter-in-law, Forrest and Denise Welmaker, are good friends of mine. Small world! (But I’d hate to mow it.)

The room was full of celebrities. KSAT anchor Leslie Mouton served as mistress of ceremonies and Susan Ford Bales, the daughter of former President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty gave a touching, passionate speech during lunch. I also spotted WOAI meteorologist Jennifer Broome and WOAI weekend co-anchor Jacqueline Ortiz.

And now, ladies and gentlemen — are you ready to rummage? Everyone at the Junior League Rummage Sale Kick-Off Party sure was! Chairs Gretchen Duggan and Anne Ahlschwede really got a lot of stuff this year.

Before the actual rummaging began, there was fabulous food catered by many different restaurants from all over San Antonio (there’s that food thing again) and an enormous silent auction.

While I was shopping, I ran into my new friend and current Junior League President Tiffany Mills and her husband Todd. I also spoke with John and Michelle Kocurek, Scott Weems, Sunny Giarritta, Lisa Keller and Terri Herbold.

Now it’s time to hand out my first (and I’m sure not my last) apology. In my column last week I mentioned running into my “good friend” Elizabeth Berkeley-Jones. The problem is that my friend is named Catherine Berkeley-Jones. Oops!
