Boerne distance runner Lorin Wilson placed an impressive third in the 1,500-meter run at the always-tough UTSA Relays Saturday in San Antonio.

Wilson ran the finals in 4:06.37 after a 4:05.00 run in the preliminary seedings. Rolanda Vela of Edinburg North took second with a finals time of 4:03.54, and Bryan Downey of The Woodlands in Conroe won the gold with a finals time of 3:56.00.

“What makes Lorin’s finish even more impressive is that it came in the championship division,” Boerne head track coach Danny Threadgill said.  “That means he was competing against the best runners from all over the state.”

Wilson’s bronze paced a limited field of Boerne athletes at the prestigious event. Austin Freeman finished in a four-way tie for eighth in the boys’ pole vault and Michael Tyler came in ninth in the boys’ 400-meter dash Olympic Development race. Jordan Baccus placed seventh in girls’ shot put, and Dustin Benac finished 29th in the boys’ 1,500-meter Olympic Development run.

Greyhound athletes also forged some strong individual performances March 15 at the Ranger Relays at Smithson Valley.

Hannah McCord’s first-place time of 2:25.77 in the girls’ 800 meters set a personal record.

“That was probably the biggest performance of the day,” Threadgill said.  “It was by far her best effort in a very competitive race.”

Baccus won the girls’ shot put with a toss of 37-2 and Madeline Hurdt won the girls’ discus with a throw of 116-11. Caitlin Jobson took silver in discus with a throw of 103-7.

Kara McClendon captured second in girls’ pole vault with a leap of 8-feet -even.

The Lady Hounds finished seventh overall in the team standings with 55 points.

Freeman won second place in the boys’ pole vault event with a leap of 13-6.

Tyler took third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.34 and won another bronze in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.81.

The Boerne boys finished sixth in the team standings with 32 points.

The boys’ and girls’ varsities and junior varsities travel to Kerrville Friday for a noon meet.
