Boerne High School junior and senior students will participate in a Shattered Dreams program on March 29 and 30. Shattered Dreams promotes responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving due to drinking or riding with a drunk driver. It emphasizes the results of alcohol-related crashes: the shattered dreams of those who drive after drinking, the innocent victims, and their friends and families. Students will witness a mock crash on March 29 followed by a memorial/ assembly on March 30 where they will have the opportunity to hear from speakers who have lost young loved ones in alcohol-related accidents. Students who participate in the crash scenario and who represent the “Living Dead” (students who are removed from the classroom every 15 minutes on the day of the crash to represent the number of students who die in alcohol-related accidents) will also attend a Student Retreat to be held at St. John Lutheran Church from 5:30 to 9 p.m. March 29, when they will have the opportunity to participate in activities designed to help them to reflect more on the consequences of alcohol use. All interested parents are invited to attend a special parent information session prior to the Shattered Dreams Parent-Student Workshop being held today at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church at 410 N. Main in Boerne. Heather Allen, Boerne ISD student assistance counselor, will discuss how to talk to children about drinking and drugs and will provide information about alcohol poisoning and specific drugs that seem to be most popular in Boerne. The session will be held from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
