Saturday night programs at the Guadalupe River State Park continue this weekend with the San Antonio Astronomical Association’s “Star Night.” Members of the San Antonio Astronomical Society, coordinated by Don Baker, invite you to see Saturn and its spectacular rings through professional-grade telescopes. View the Great Orion Nebula, a nursery for infant stars. See the Earth’s moon in amazing close-up detail. This and other programs in the series will start at 8 p.m. at the park amphitheater unless noted otherwise. Other programs for March and April include: Texas Hill Country Birds, March 31. The program consists of pictures and information about local birds in the Texas Hill Country and includes how to identify local birds and more. Examples of bird houses will be discussed, along with and information on what to do and what not to do with them. The presenter will be Georgina Schwartz of the San Antonio Audubon Society. Butterflies, April 7 Discussion of butterflies and strategies for encouraging and attracting these beautiful creatures to your yard. Special emphasis will be placed on the Monarch migrations. Locally acclaimed monarch butterfly expert and Texas Master Naturalist Kip Kiphart will lead the discussion Fireflies, April 14 All you have wondered about fireflies. We will be talking about America’s favorite insect, according to a Gallup Poll. We will talk about their life cycle, why and how they glow and blink, and in the end take a short firefly-spotting hike to identify fireflies in the field. Texas Master Naturalist Ernie Lee will share his special knowledge of and interest in fireflies. Limestone, April 21 What is limestone and why is it so abundant in this area? To answer this question we’ll have Bill Ward, emeritus professor of geology, University of New Orleans, and now retired to the Hill Country.
