By Pat Turner Contributing Writer Soccer A loss to Marshall may have cost Clark a shot at a District 28-5A championship, but the setback didn’t kill the Cougarettes’ spirit by any means. After all, they are still heading into the playoffs as 28-5A’s runnerup team with hopes of making plenty of noise during that run. Clark, which opened the post-season with a bi-district match against Victoria Memorial this past Tuesday, appears to be ready for the task. That was evident during the final week of the season, after the 1-0 loss to Marshall, the Cougarettes tie Warren (1-1), before reeling off three straight wins, including a 9-0 regular season finale against Jay. “It was nice to see them finish strong,” said Clark coach Jennifer Collins, whose Cougarettes entered the playoffs with a 20-2-2 record. “I believe the Marshall game was very draining, both emotionally and physically, for the girls. Perhaps the frustration of losing that game aided in the Warren tie. “In the long run, I believe those two games will prove to be very helpful for the team because it reminds us that winning is not a foregone conclusion. I think we may have forgotten what it felt like to lose, and experiencing that feeling should serve as a strong motivator for us to work hard to keep from feeling like that again.” The Cougarettes have shown what they can do when everything is clicking with solid play from Kristin Maas, Brooke Lanie, Whitney Lanie, Heather Sengelmann, Brianna Tammaro, Sarah Klenke, Bekah Richards, Ashleigh Schill. Christi Oswalt and Brittany Anderson. Now, they hope to do it a little longer. Clark ‘s boys aren’t going to the playoffs, but the Cougars ended the District 28-5A season on a happy note with a 4-0 win over Jay. Eric Gomez led the victory with two goals. Francisco Garza and Jordan Smith also got into the scoring act. Clark ended the season at 7-10 overall and 5-9 in district. Softball Amanda Nordberg turned in another strong performance in helping the Cougarettes to a 13-0 District 28-5A win over Jay. Nordberg struck out 11 batters during her one-hitter, while the Cougarettes pounded Jay pitching for 13 hits. The win helped Clark (11-9, 5-3) stay in the heat of the 28-5A race. Clark played Holmes Tuesday and faces Stevens Friday.
