Two to Texas Relays

The annual Texas Relays now works on invitations only, and this year Incarnate Word has two athletes receiving the coveted passes.

Freshman Shayn Weidner competed in the 5,000-meter run Wednesday, while senior Morgan Moszee competes in the 100-meter event Friday. Texas Relays invitations are based on times and distances posted by the individuals in previous meets.

Tennis for a deuce

Both tennis teams at Incarnate Word, men and women, have two matches each this week, highlighted by the annual Hildebrand Avenue squabble with Trinity.

The Trinity match comes at the somewhat different time of 9:30 a.m. Friday, and this means the brother combo of UIW’s John Newman and Trinity’s Butch Newman will renew their familial rivalry.

A year ago, the teams played twice and the home team won both times, men and women. The Cardinals will host Tyler Junior College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Variety for baseball

Seeking to break out of a down moment in their schedule, the baseball Cardinals at Incarnate Word (22-12) have an interesting week in store. The team is home for three games at Sullivan Field with Heartland Conference newcomer UT-Permian Basin.  These two have never before played each other in baseball.  The Falcons (12-19) are playing their way through the Heartland, but are ineligible for league championship play while they serve their provisional time in the NCAA Division II.

Game times are 1 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader, and noon Saturday for a single game of nine innings.  Most recently, the Cardinals dropped all four games to Heartland leader St. Edward’s.

Softball is moving on up

Incarnate Word’s softball Cardinals (16-22) are climbing in the Heartland Conference race for seedings in the post-season tournament, but this week UIW will take a week off to play non-league games at home. The Cardinals host UT-Permian Basin for two doubleheaders: Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the conference, the Cardinals have won their last five league games and are now sitting in the fourth slot for the tournament which will include six teams.  The top two teams get first round byes.

UIW has eight Heartland games remaining in the regular season and all eight are against the teams just ahead in the standings — four with St. Mary’s and four with Montana State-Billings.
