As Fiesta quickly approaches, it becomes clear that San Antonio is all about tradition. This week I met descendents of Alamo heroes, partied with the kings and queens of San Antonio society and got some inside scoop.

First I found myself feeling like a kid at the annual Poco Loco Easter Egg Hunt hosted by Craig and Patty Hardy and Melinda and Brian Biggs. This invitation-only event is one of the hottest tickets in town for all the children and families of ’09. This fun family event offered great food, hay rides, baby chicks, several moon bounces, and margaritas for the grown-ups and, of course, the ever-anticipated egg hunt.

Upon arriving, I immediately found Hardy family matriarch Fae Hardy. I think Fae is one of the nicest people in the whole world and I always look forward to visiting with her. I also chatted with Eric and Laura Nelson, Rick and Ann Clifton, Sallie Guy and Woodridge Principal Cordell Jones. While I was searching for eggs, I noticed Elizabeth Lane, Brent Marshall, Julia Mann and Carl and Kelly Fellbaum were all enjoying the festivities.

Local attorney Charles Hardy was serving as tour guide and driver for the hay rides. From my vantage point on top of a moving haystack, I saw Stan and Jan Studer as well as my good friend Margaret Barnes.

After the egg hunt, I found myself at a private dinner at the Alamo with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. I was invited to the party by Kathleen Carter who, I discovered, is a descendant of Alamo hero Ben Milam. My fun tablemates for this delicious dinner included David and Diane Baldwin, Charles and Gladys Tondre Clark, and DRT Vice President Linda Myers.

After dinner, we were treated to an amazing private tour of the Alamo in the evening. (I stood by a famous oak tree in the courtyard and listened for ghosts but I didn’t hear anything.)

The DRT is made up of descendants of “a man or woman who rendered loyal service for Texas prior to the consummation of the Annexation Agreement of the Republic of Texas on Feb. 19, 1846.” This chapter of the DRT is in charge of the preser-vation and upkeep of the Alamo.

And, finally, my friend John Spalten gave me some scoop on the new board members of the exclusive Town Club of San Antonio. John Spalten is the new president and Lawson Walden is secretary/ treasurer. Second-year board members are Chip Archer, Blake Bonner, Peter Hennessey IV and Carter Speer. New board members are Steve Buffkin, Keith Ferrell, George Shaw, Merrill Swanson and Thomas Tyng.

In my “spare time” I did a little research and discovered that it is rumored that when it was founded in 1949, the original members of the Town Club would not allow a member of the German Club or the Order of the Alamo into the Town Club.

Since then, the Town Club, German Club and Order of the Alamo “made up” and today many prominent men in the community are members of more than one of these clubs.

Speaking of the Town Club, word on the street is that they throw one of the best Fiesta parties around! And you can bet I’ll be at that one and as many others as I can fit in my schedule. Everyone dust off your Fiesta gear and let’s get ready to PARTY! So TTFN and Viva Fiesta!
