Drive anywhere in northwest and west San Antonio and it’s obvious that Northside ISD is a destination district. There are new businesses, giant commercial centers in development, increased traffic, never-ending road construction, and scores of new neighborhoods with thousands of new houses. The impact on Northside is evident: overcrowded schools and a shortage of classrooms. About 4,000 new students are enrolling in the District every year, and many new schools open almost at capacity. NISD expects to top 100,000 students in the next five years and will surpass Austin ISD this summer to become the fourth largest public school system in Texas. Last fall, a 200-member Citizens’ Bond Committee, made up of parents, residents, and businesspeople, looked at enrollment projections, analyzed the needs of the district, and then recommended that the school board call for a bond election. The NISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a bond proposal to ask voters for $692.67 million to build 12 new schools and fund additions and renovations throughout the District. Early voting will be held April 30 to May 8 and Election Day is May 12. For a detailed list of proposed projects and for more information about School Bond 2007, visit http://bond.nisd.net.
