2007-2008 AHISD athletic physicals The Alamo Heights Independent School District will be offering athletic physicals for the 2007-2008 school year May 7. All student-athletes who attend AHISD are invited and encouraged to participate. Incoming seventh-, eighth-, ninth-, and 11th-grade student-athletes must submit a new physical examination form for the 2007-2008 school year. In addition, any incoming 8th-, 10th- and 12th-graders who did not participate in sports during the 2006-2007 school year will be required to submit a new physical form. Incarnate Word synchronized swimmers see action at U.S. National Championships The synchronized swimming Cardinals at Incarnate Word get the week’s first action when they travel to Indianapolis for the U.S. National Championships. Fresh off their third-place finish in the recent U.S. Collegiates, the Cardinals now step into deeper waters, as the Nationals not only include university squads but also the elite of all club teams in the country. The competitions began Wednesday and runs through Saturday. Cardinals softball in championships Incarnate Word’s softball team has been seeded fourth in this weekend’s Heartland Conference Championships, and the Cardinals will not have far to travel for the games. The tournament runs today through Saturday (April 26 to 28) and will be played at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. The Cardinals, riddled with injuries, carry an 18-31 mark into the tournament. But that means little as the tournament winner gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament. A year ago, riding in on an at-large bid, Incarnate Word made it to the region’s final game before succumbing. First up for Incarnate Word today is number-five seed Lincoln, from Missouri. The winner of this game advances into the winner’s bracket to face top-seeded St. Edward’s. In the regular season, Incarnate Word and Lincoln played four games at Cardinals Field and UIW won all four. Lincoln, all-time, has never defeated UIW, having lost all eight games played between the two teams. Redbirds baseball on the road The baseball Cardinals are on the road, again. The Cardinals will be in the northwest Friday and Saturday to play four games at Montana State-Billings. Two games are on Friday and two on Saturday, both days with a 2 p.m. first pitch. Last weekend, the Cardinals were in Missouri to play Lincoln. Next weekend, they will be at Oklahoma Panhandle. The reason for all the late travel is because those three northern teams came south early in the year because of cold weather wherever they were coming from. The Cardinals head north with a season mark of 28-19, including a record of 17-15 in the Heartland Conference. The Cardinals are resting in third in the Heartland with no hope of catching leader St. Edward’s with a 26-6 record. There are only eight games remaining for both teams. Montana State is fourth in league play at 12-16. On last weekend’s Lincoln trip, the Cardinals got a power show from junior catcher Chris Solis. In game three, a 19-12 win for UIW, Solis was 3-4 at the plate and all three hits were home runs, tying a three-year-old UIW mark. Also those three dingers produced eight RBI which is a new Incarnate Word school record.
