Regarding the ETJ I periodically read both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution just to keep myself aware of what this country is all about. I am by no means a constitutional authority, but it does seem to me there are some anomalies in Kendall County and Boerne that should be addressed. I have a concern regarding governance without representation. It is my belief that all citizens should be able to vote for (or against) the elected officials that govern them. Our county and city are in the process of striking an agreement wherein certain areas, and citizens, will be governed by an elected entity (the City Council) but will not be able to vote for council members. I feel we should have the right to vote for those governing us or to remain outside their control. As I read Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution, I interpret it to mean we should have the right to vote for any elected body that has control over us. The ongoing dialogue and agreements between the city and the county are being conducted as though those of us in the ETJ do not exist. Donald W. Titus Boerne, Texas
Not so together I went to the candidate forum sponsored by the Boerne Together group at the community center on April 19 to hear the candidates for the May 12 election. On approaching the center, I was met by a former Boerne Together candidate for public office who was passing out copies of e-mails that were made between some of the candidates and members of the Kendall County Economic Development Corporation along with his criticism of the e-mails. I took a copy and read it and reread it only to discover people doing their jobs as I would hope. I have enjoyed living here for 14 years, met some of the nicest people and it bothers me to see someone passing out copies of someone else’s e-mails trying to make them look bad. Something about this just doesn’t look right. I ask that whoever leads Boerne Together that, if the name of this organization implies unity and togetherness of all the citizens of Kendall County, then please inform your members of it. The forum was good, but the questions did not separate the differences in the candidates as I felt they should. There has been a lot said over the e-mail and a meeting with Nathan Macias, and I would like you to know there are two sides to every story. The city’s master plan outlines objectives that developers would be encouraged to follow, especially when they are not even in the city limit. The Esperanza developer doesn’t need the city’s permission to build (many do not understand this) yet they are willing to work within the objectives of Boerne’s master plan. This includes free land for schools, parks, trails, police and fire stations. The city has two options – to work with this developer or against him. Stopping this developer is not an option. The big difference between the candidates is that some are willing to work with the growth that Boerne is facing and some against it, resulting in poor development and bad relationships. The facts are Boerne and the surrounding area is growing at a very fast pace and we can either work with our new neighbors or against them. My hope is that we work with each other to keep Boerne beautiful and put this bickering behind us. Please check out the candidates very carefully and remember to vote in the coming election on May 12. This is our city. Please help put some responsible people in office. Mike Luckey Boerne, Texas
Thanks to local golf courses The Boerne High School golf teams would like to publicly extend our gratitude to the Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club, Tapatio Springs Golf Resort and The Buckhorn Golf Course for their continued support of our young men and women. By allowing the BHS golfers access to their facilities, they have been instrumental in helping with the maturation of young golfers in our area. People like Jesse Hawkins, Don Zamora, and Will Garry at Tapatio Springs, Courtney Connell and David Murrah at Fair Oaks, and Edwin Dickens, Gaston Gamboa, Maggie Randle, Jeff Mirts and Greg Meyer at The Buckhorn, deserve recognition for their generosity in providing a fantastic environment for young golfers to develop both their skills for competition and a lifelong love of the sport.
