The Trinity University Tigers men beat Johns Hopkins, 5-1, Sunday in the NCAA Division III tennis regional at the University of Mary Washington and advanced to the national quarterfinals. Trinity is now 18-4 and seeded No. 1 in the region and ranked No. 7 nationally. The team takes on third-ranked and defending national champion Emory Tuesday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis. The NCAA team tournament will be held May 15 to17 and the singles and doubles championships May 18 to 20. Individual bids will be announced Monday. Johns Hopkins, the No. 3 regional seed and ranked 13th nationally, completed its season with a 19-3 record. The Tigers, led by head coach Butch Newman, are making their 12th appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. Trinity lost 4-0 to eventual finalist Middlebury in the 2006 quarterfinals. The Tiger men’s and women’s teams captured the NCAA national crown in 2000. On Sunday, the Tigers won two of three doubles matches and three of six singles. Three of the singles matches were halted in progress because of NCAA rules. The clincher for the Tigers was at No. 2 singles, as senior All-American D.J. Petros of Corpus Christi beat Joe Vasoontara 6-3, 6-2. Trinity senior Hayley Dittus of Brentwood, Tenn., and junior Alicia Hunt of Portland, Ore., will represent the Tigers at the NCAA Division III Women’s Championships May 18 through 20 at Fredericksburg. The two All-Americans will compete in the singles championship tournament.
