The Trinity University Tigers were eliminated from the NCAA Division III Pinewood (La.) Regional softball tournament Friday with a 7-1 loss to the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. Trinity, which beat Hardin-Simmons 1-0 earlier in the day at Louisiana College, completed its season with a 26-12 record. On Thursday, Chapman edged the Tigers 1-0 in a 14-inning marathon at the double-elimination event. Tiger senior pitcher Erin Mulvey entered in relief in the second inning in the Mississippi College game and fanned seven batters and 10 against Hardin-Simmons. She amassed 162 strikeouts during the season and became the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference all-time single-season strikeout leader. Earlier in the season, Mulvey became the career SCAC leader in strikeouts and finished with 463. Against Hardin-Simmons, Mulvey allowed no runs, no walks and two hits. Mulvey finished with a 16-5 season record. Senior pitcher Jillian Degerness pitched one inning and took the loss. Degerness completed the season with an 8-4 record. Junior outfielder Michelle Gossein cracked her second home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning of the Mississippi College game. Gossein hit the winning RBI against Hardin-Simmons. The Tigers made their sixth NCAA postseason appearance and third in a row. Trinity captured the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship – and the NCAA automatic bid – with a 2-0 shutout April 30 at the conference tournament held at the Jesse H. Jones Recreation Area Softball Field. It marked the Tigers’ seventh SCAC softball title.
