Safety Town testament to community

We would like to take a brief moment and pay special thanks to those that were instrumental in setting Safety Town in motion once again this year. Our son was in the inaugural class in 2004 and our daughter is an alumnus of this year’s class.

For those of you unfamiliar, Safety Town is a weeklong program sponsored by area businesses and put into motion through the tandem efforts of the Boerne Police Department, the Boerne Independent School District and volunteers too numerous to name. The program is aimed at children going into Kindergarten and serves several purposes. First, it teaches the children about safety issues such as riding a bus, the purpose of “911,” the need to use seat belts, stray animals, basic weather hazards, etc. Our community comes out in force to reiterate these ideas with visits from the Boerne Police Department, the Kendall County EMS, the Boerne Fire Department, Boerne Animal Control, and Kendall County Judge Gaylan Schroeder, to name just a few. Secondly, it takes some of the “edge” off of entering Kindergarten for these youngsters, as they interact in this group setting and see what fun the learning environment can be.

The generosity of area businesses in their sponsorship, the coordinated effort of the Boerne Police Department to provide Officer Hector Hernandez and Officer Jason Abbott as instructors, Marcy Voss with the BISD, Jodi Hernandez (who not only makes her husband Officer Hernandez look good, but truly drives much of the “behind the scenes” activities as the program coordinator) and numerous other volunteers are a wonderful testament to the Boerne community. This is something we can certainly be proud of as we introduce our youngsters into the educational system.
