Science Fiction abounds with memorable lines. Our humanoid feet planted firmly on earth, how can we not be swept away with longing to follow in the wake of characters like Star Trek’s Captain Kirk who “boldly go where no man has gone before”?

Science Fiction is a genre that is all-inclusive. Readers of every age have long been fascinated by stories stewed from the starry realms of outer-space.

We devotees of science fiction are forever seeking new stories to take us beyond our earthly existence.

And now Boerne Public Library is proud to introduce readers to an exciting children’s author of science fiction and fantasy, M. Bradley Davis.

Texas born and raised, Davis’s career path toward authorship is as fascinating as any voyage logged by Luke Skywalker. From toy salesman to museum exhibits clerk, Davis has done it all.

He has had an impressive career too as an elementary school teacher, excelling in (what else?) technology.

Davis has drawn upon his varied professions and his wide-ranging interests that include astronomy, photography, and reading to craft riveting science fiction and fantasy novels for young people.

Fans of these fascinating genres will not want to miss M. Bradley Davis’s visit to the library at noon Friday, Aug. 10. We will provide a light lunch. Davis will satisfy your literary appetite with an introduction into his novels of other-worldly adventure in which young people battle forces unlike any found on Earth. Recommended for those in Grades 3 and up, this is one library program that will take you out of this world!

High-Octane August

In the Youth Services Department, August has traditionally been our “sleeper” month. We pack away our puppets and put our storytimes on hold until September. This summer, however, popular demand has caused us to shelve our siesta plans and think instead fiesta.

We will therefore feature two storytimes during August. Miss Alicia will continue her highly popular and delightful Tiempo de Cuentos Spanish Family Storytime on Thursdays at 10 a.m. I will host my toddler storytime on a new day, Friday, at 10 a.m. I hope that all my many little listeners from Wednesday will join me for storytime fun on that new day. A number of parents have expressed interest in an evening storytime. If the idea appeals to you, simply email me and I will try to set aside a regularly scheduled evening for a Pajama Jamboree of stories, music, and more. Get caught reading

If you have not looked at our website (www.boerne.lib.tx.us) recently, you are in for a surprise. We now feature links to YouTube video clips of library events. Click on my KIDZ NEWZ to link to all manner of news and visuals about our Youth Department.

You will also find my latest feature, which provides a video clip of a young person caught reading at the library. Who knows—you might be the next caught by our camera!

Boerne Public Library takes it all off!

We’ve stripped our prices down to the bare bones. Don’t miss our sizzling summer book sale on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library annex on the corner of Lohman and Main. We’ll have the hottest deals in town on books, movies, and audio items.

Congratulations to Natalie Morgan

A standing ovation goes this month to our Reference Librarian Natalie Morgan who recently earned her Masters in Library Science. I encountered Natalie when I first came to this library some two years ago. I still recall my first sight of her; she was gamely clamoring beneath a bank of computers, heedless of the wires and dust. And so it has been ever since then—Natalie forever forging ahead to set things right and make them the very best they can be for Boerne Public Library patrons. I know that Natalie has worked very hard to achieve her MLS. She is a stellar librarian, and I am proud to be her colleague.
