Public hearings are now set for the city of Cibolo’s proposed property tax rate and budget for fiscal year 2008.

City Council voted unanimously Monday to propose keeping the current tax of 31.8 cents per $100 valuation. The figure combines rates for daily city operations and debt service.

Hearings on the recommended tax rate will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and Sept. 4. A hearing on the draft budget is to take place Sept. 4.

A town hall meeting about the budget, taxes and other current city issues is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 8. Council expects to adopt a final rate and budget by Sept. 13.

In recent action, council:

• Approved buying an 11.9-acre tract of land from the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City School District for $360,000, plus the costs of survey, title policy and other closing factors. The city plans to build a 1.5-million-gallon elevated water storage tower on the land at Farm Road 1103 and Weidner Road. Council later awarded Landmark with a $1.84 million bid to build the tower.

• Rejected bids received for a planned renovation of the Niemietz Park pavilion.

• Accepted a study of the city’s existing municipal facilities.

• Hosted a presentation by the firm Archimedia regarding implementation of design-built standards and construction methods citywide.

• Awarded Key Enterprise with a $1.25 million bid for development of a 16-inch PVC water main.

• Accepted a study to formulate a Town Creek flood protection plan.
