The Kendall County Retired Teachers Association’s 11 a.m. luncheon at Po Po’s Restaurant features State Rep. Nathan Macias. All retired teachers and school personnel are encouraged to come and bring a friend. Visitors are welcome. The Leon Springs Business Association hosts TxDOT representative Greg Malatek and Randy Grones, engineer for the Interstate 10 project at the Dominion, as featured guest speakers at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Leon Springs Dance Hall. Visitors are welcome. A set menu of appetizer and dessert buffets is $20 for LSBA members and those who RSVP, $25 at the door. “Rumors,” a Neil Simon play, opens tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Boerne Community Theatre, 907 E. Blanco, and continues through Sept. 30. The comedy focuses on party guests struggling to understand their hosts' whereabouts and why they are absent. FRIDAY, SEPT. 14

The U.S. Pizza Team will be visiting area H-E-B stores today as part of a pizza demonstration series, including acrobatic dough tossing, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 24165 Interstate 10 West in Leon Springs and 2:30 to 4 p.m. at 420 W. Bandera in Boerne. Customers will get to meet team members, receive pizza-tossing tips, and sample pizzas and wines.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 15

Boerne Birders Family Birding Day is 8 to 10 a.m. at the Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne. Admission is free. Bring your favorite bird identification book and binoculars. If you are just getting started and need to borrow, the CNC will have some to share. The group will check out the visitor center bird feeders, look for birds along Cibolo Nature Center trails and talk about the fall migration. Methodist Boerne Medical Center holds a community open house at 134 Menger Springs, near the intersection of Highway 46 and the Interstate 10 access road. The event includes burial of a community time capsule at 9:30 a.m. From 9:30 a.m. to noon, guests can tour the office building and meet the tenants: Alamo Maxillofacial Surgical Associates; Holcomb Pediatrics and Sports Medicine; MedCare Associates; South Texas Radiology & Imaging Center; South Texas Oncology & Hematology, and Tri County Home Health Care. Free health screenings include blood glucose, oral cancer and cholesterol (must fast at least 12 hours prior). Blood pressure checks and car-seat safety demonstration, free mini-massages and health literature and goodies are also offered. Drawings for door prizes will take place throughout the event. Flu shots are $25.

Fotoseptiembre – “Residue of Conflict: Laos,” an exhibit of photographs of “the most bombed country in world history,” will be featured at an opening reception 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cibolo Nature Center, off of Highway 46 and City Park Road in Boerne. Cibolo Songs and Stories features One Minute To Midnight. MONDAY, SEPT. 17

An Upper Cibolo Creek Workshop I: “What Makes a Healthy Creek?” is presented 9 a.m. to noon at the Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne. Presenters Anne Adams, aquatic biologist, and Kathy Ward, geologist  and science education specialist, explain the fundamentals of what makes the Cibolo Creek exemplary. This workshop will cover land formations, the stream system, water  cycle, riparian plant communities and habitat diversity of the Cibolo Creek. It will include maps, photographs and creekside activities. Cost: Members $15 per person and non-members $20 per person. The workshop is limited to 20. To register, call (830) 249-4616.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 19

A Boerne Chamber of Commerce “Passion For Service” seminar at the Holiday Inn-Express, 35000 Interstate 10, features client communications expert Bill Drury, who from 1985 to 1990 was the national training consultant for the Zig Ziglar Corporation. Two identical presentations, 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., allow employers to send half their people in the morning and half in the afternoon. A Kaffee Klatch is hosted 3 to 5 p.m. by the Boerne Area Historical Preservation Society at the Kuhlman-King House. Old-fashioned German refreshments will be served in an 1800s-era kitchen. Tours of the complex will be available. See the new historical display in the Graham Building.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 28

“Sign On Harvest Moon,” a book- and artwork-signing event at 6:30 p.m. at the Cibolo Nature Center, is presented by the Native Plant Society of Texas-Boerne chapter. Tickets are $10. The authors’ and artists’ works are based on Texas plants and nature. Their work will be available for sale and signing. The event also features a buffet and silent auction. SATURDAY, SEPT. 29

A “Tour of Yards” is held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at homes throughout the Boderne area. Admission is free. Pick up descriptions and directions at the Cibolo Nature Center between Sept. 25 and 29. The sites will demonstrate that residents can landscape with plants that are attractive and well-adapted to our demanding soil and climate. The homeowner or a local expert will be available at each yard to answer your questions. Visit the yards of your choice. The Tour of Yards is presented by the Native Plant Society of Texas and the Cibolo Nature Center.

“A Taste of Comfort,” the popular gathering in the town park, will feature a silent auction, food samples from Comfort eateries, music, dancing, raffes and more. The event benefits the Comfort Public Library.

FRIDAY, OCT. 5

Fair Oaks Craft Fair will be held 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the ballroom at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club, 7900 Fair Oaks Parkway, Fair Oaks Ranch. Admission is free and this event is open to the public. Come shop as vendors and artists display their unique gifts and decorated items. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School Library. FRIDAY, OCT. 12

The Key To The Hills Rod Run is held today and Saturday in Downtown Boerne on the city’s Main Plaza, where aficionados will show off vintage cars at their best! Over 500 pre-1949 street rods come from all over the country for this show. The event includes a walking poker run, casino night, bingo, food booths, automotive vendors, live entertainment and an awards ceremony.

THURSDAY, OCT. 18

Boerne Concert Band plays a free community concert at 7 p.m. on Boerne’s Main Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to enjoy music under the stars.

FRIDAY, OCT. 19

The Boerne Festival of Arts & Music runs today through Sunday at various locations. An annual event put on by Cibolo Arts Council and the Boerne Area Artists Association, it features a weekend of art exhibits, art sales, live music, food, drinks and fun.
