Friends of the Leon Valley Public Library is holding a used book sale 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Saturday at the library annex, 6500 Evers Road at the corner of Evers and Poss, outside Loop 410 between Wurzbach and Huebner in Leon Valley. More than 11,000 books and magazines in good condition will be offered and are priced from 10 cents up. All proceeds benefit the Leon Valley Public Library. Call 684-0720 for more information.

Friends of the Maverick Library is holding a used book sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Maury Maverick Jr. Library, 8700 Mystic Park. More than 100 cartons of books have been donated for the sale. Great Northwest Library, 9050 Wellwood, will celebrate Chuseok, a Korean Harvest Festival, from 2 to 4 p.m. The schedule includes the opening of an art exhibition by Korean artist Kristin Sue Kim; a performance by the Na Myong Ja Korean Folk Dancers; and a demonstration by the Korea-America Tae Kwon Do Academy. A reception for Ms. Kim, the dance performance and Tae Kwon Do demonstration will take place in the Library Community Meeting Room. Kim’s art work will be hung through out the library, from Sept. 15 through Oct. 26. This event is free and open to the public.

UTSA is sponsoring the fourth annual “European Film Festival,” featuring 18 recent films plus two documentaries through more than 40 screenings and two open discussion sessions. OASIS, a non-profit educational organization for adults age 50 and over, offers an intergenerational tutoring program, matching an adult with a child in need of improving reading and language skills as a friend and a positive role model. Pulte Homes’ 4th Annual Charity Open Golf Tournament will take place on Sept. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. The tournament will be a shotgun start, four-person Florida scramble. All proceeds will benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children, which provide assistance for those with medical needs, primarily due to severe burn injuries, and complicated orthopedic cases. Regal Cinemas Cans Film Festival will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. A free movie and junior-size popcorn treat will be given to anyone who donates $3 or three nonperishable food items. The most needed items are peanut butter, cereal, tuna, rice, beans, pasta, canned meats, full meals in a can, and “pop top” food items. Participating theaters on the Northwest Side include Cielo Vista 18 on Loop 410 between Ingram and Culebra and Fiesta 16, behind H-E-B at De Zavala and Interstate 10.
