By Cori Smelker Contributing Writer The “Wildest Auction in the West” brought out the people — and their checkbooks — as cars, trips and other memorabilia was bid on, all for the benefit of Boysville Inc. of Converse. The annual event, held Aug. 24 at the Alzafar Shrine Temple on Loop 1604, proved to be one of Boysville’s most successful fundraisers ever, pulling in a record $450,000 for this San Antonio charity. The 2006 version of the “Wildest Auction in the West” raised $250,000 but this year exceeded all expectations. With more than 600 people in attendance, the folks at Boysville called the evening a huge triumph. From the food to the prizes, the entire evening was a top-notch event. The theme for the evening was western and the food reflected the theme. Don Strange, the caterer provided juicy barbecue sandwiches and all the trimmings that made the meal special. On hand to entertain the crowd was Lil’ Bit and the Customatics, with a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll. The evening started off with a chance to preview all the auction items, which included a custom-made necklace, gardening supplies, a solar-powered deer feeder and everything in between. Also on bid was a 2007 championship basketball signed by the San Antonio Spurs. Several items covered hunting supplies or hunting trips. To counteract the hunting packages, one auction item was the “Hunter’s Widow Package,” offering pampering that is the answer to every woman’s dream while “he” is off hunting. Without a doubt the most sought-after items were a trip to Walt Disney World, a trip to Australia, and a 1968 Blue Shelby GT. The Mustang was part of the 2006 auction and was purchased for $100,000 by Dr. George Rapier, who immediately donated the car back to Boysville for this year’s auction. Another hot ticket item was a 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle, donated by Bob Beadle, which was placed in the raffle. Ironically enough, Beadle won the raffle and the motorcycle. He, too, chose to donate it to the auction, where it was later sold. Casino tables were set up in the back of the hall for those who enjoyed trying their hand at a little blackjack, Texas Hold‘Em and craps. Donations equaled a certain amount in tokens, which were then exchanged for raffle tickets at the end of play. Tables filled up quickly as company and individual sponsors wanted to support this worthwhile charity. The funds raised at the Wildest Auction in the West are earmarked specifically for medical, dental and counseling services for children who have had none. Boysville also provides educational services including tutoring, mentoring and supplementary educational materials as needed.
