Leon Valley sweep targets outstanding warrants

Residents with outstanding warrants are encouraged to settle them during the period of voluntary compliance, beginning Sept. 24. When the period ends at an undisclosed time, the residents face apprehension.

”They’re going to go out and arrest in the field. It doesn’t matter if you are at home or in the office,” said Vickie Wallace, Leon Valley Municipal Court administrator.

Warrants are issued for residents who plead guilty or no contest to a charge, then violate their court agreement. Warrants are also issued when defendants fail to appear in court, a court employee said.

The purpose of the sweep is to clear the city’s docket backlog. The city’s Web site, www.leonvalleytexas.gov, features its “Most Wanted” – whose fines range from $4,310 to $6,370 – in hopes that residents can help locate the individuals.

Residents are encouraged not to attempt to detain anybody, but instead they can call the court at 684-1391, ext. 298, or the police department at 684-3215.

Those with outstanding warrants are asked to appear at the Leon Valley Municipal Building, 6400 El Verde Road. Warrants cannot be resolved via telephone.

The court’s hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Results of the sweep were pending as of press time, but Wallace said they have received a lot of phone calls.
